KUDO Michigan USA & the Samurai Project

Just wanted to let my friends on K4L know that we are doing something very unique here in Detroit. Our new KUDO Dojo/Gym opens in September and will be 100% non-profit. Kids 17 and younger will train for FREE!!! Young men and women 18 to 23 will train for free in return for three hours per week of volunteer time in the kids program (homework help, tutoring, coaching, mentoring, etc..)

There will be a dues structure for those over 23 and that money goes directly to the Samurai Project Charity for At-Risk Kids. There is allot of crime among kids in Detroit, kids killing kids. Most of the dialogue evolves around what to do with these kids, where to lock them up. I say lets stop creating them!! The Samurai Project exists for this purpose.

Check out our updated site detailing the Samurai Project and our new venture... www.detroitkudo.com

Will you be planning ahead to send some of those kids to the first Junior World Tournament in 2014?

Osu Detroit Kudo,

I commend you on your initiative, yet I would like to bring your attention to two points:

One is about offering value for free... this type of unbalanced exchange breeds criminal behavior where kids are led to thinking that they can get something for nothing.
I see no reasons why, they too, could not offer 3 hours a week of their time to public good in exchange for instruction.

Two is about the wording found in the Samurai Project; it is possible to understand that Kudo is the best physical and mental training available for kids; maybe it is, but this is yet to be demonstrated... Kudo has not been around for 1000's of years as we seem to be led to believe.

Quote:
(...) Children will receive the best physical and mental training available. Kudo (Classical Martial Arts) as a character development tool has been time tested over thousands of years. The relationship between the teacher, the senior student and the student is the oldest mentoring program in existence today! (...)
Wishing your Samurai Project all success.

Osu!

Thank you for the inout FedinChina!

These kids DO NOT get something for nothing. To stay in the program they must maintain acceptable grades, school attendance and behavior. In an area where only 22% graduate from High School this is hard work on their part. They must also attend our program 6 days a week! This is not just KUDO training. They can show-up between 3 and 4. In that time they do school work, maintain the Dojo and some of the surrounding community area s like the community park close by. They are also given task sheets for things to do at home where an adult in the house (if there is one) signs and we check them before each class.

As far as Kudo being time tested. Kudo is Budo is it not? Budo in it's many forms through classical ettiquite, junior/senior relationship and moral code as expressed in many forms of a Dojo Kun is, in my oppinion, the most effective mentoring program in existance today. Although I am no historian, Budo and it's practices have been around for quite some time.

Osu!

We certainly have our goals for the World Championships! I believe you have posted comments from Jukucho Azuma regarding why the Eastern European Fighters are so strong. Well, these kids live in one of the toughest area's of one of the US's most dangerous cities where they will be Kudo training 6 days a week!

I'm confident we are going to have some good fighters.

Daidojuku says that time is needed for the unification of junior rules all over the world before the 1st Junior World Tournament is held in 2014. What are the major disputes and differences in the rules of different countries and what are your proposals?

Please post in the following thread for easy reference:
