OSU,
Sorry for taking so long to post a summary of the event.
We arrived at just after 9:00 am. A little late for the kid’s session so I got my son changed in record time and out in the class with Shihan.
There were about 14 or so kids in attendance. 9 from my dojo which was really great to see since the travel time from Toronto to Kitchener is close to 2 hours and this is a long way to go for parents for a 1 hour class.
You would never be able to tell that Shihan is now 73 years old. He is so engaging with the kids, they never took their eyes off of him and he had them working everything from Kihon and kata to Kumite techniques, fingertip push ups and ido geko. The kids worked nonstop and were all smiles the entire time.
Adults started at 10:30 and went to 12. We were about 40 altogether with 18 from our Toronto dojo in attendance. This session was all Kihon and kata. Shihan working the group to review and refine everyone's basic techniques and review their movement and execution of the Takyoku and Pinans. The session ended with the Yudansha working on Bassaidai and Tekki ichi.
We had a 45 minute break for lunch. The sun came out and Shihan and I decided to sit outside in the fresh air and catch up on recent events and stories about mutual friends.
We resumed just before 1. Now it was Kumite techniques for the next hour. Shihan had us doing some very challenging leg work. Mai geri, mawashi geri, ura mawashi , mawashi geri in one count without being allowed to put our legs down between each kick. Muscles were burning after less than 3 minutes of this. We worked footwork, combinations, sonbon kumite and juji kumite.
Then it was time for the gradings. I had 5 ranging from 8th kyu to 2nd kyu grading and the other dojos had I think another 4-5 grading. Shihan reviewed all of their kata and Kihon individually with myself Sensei Bernard and Sensei Zibby. Then those that were allowed put on their pads and the Kumite started. As to be expected, the fights are always harder at seminar. With 4 North American Champions present and 2 past Word Tournament team members, the fights were challenging, but always respectfull. No big injuries, but lots of bruises and bumps dished out. For some it was their first time working with students of this caliber and the experience for them was great. Everyone rose to the occasion and did their best and it was evident.
After the grading was the obligatory pictures with Shihan and then we all went to a nearby restaurant for more training in Bieru Kata with Shihan and the Sensei’s.
Thank you Sensei Bernard for hosting the event this year. You and your wife did a great job as per usual. It was a pleasure.
Next September this seminar returns to my Toronto dojo and I look forward to welcoming everyone.

If you mean "everyone" as per your dojo rules, you should talk to Dent so the next September dates don't overlap with the 3rd K4L NorthEast Invitational, and maybe we could support each other's events...

OSU,
As I have said, I have always had an open door policy. Anyone is welcome as a guest of my dojo. How else can we expose people to what we do? This applies not only to the seminar but classes etc. I have operated this way since I opened and Dent and I have discussed his coming up to attend in the past. It just never worked out with his calendar yet. In the same way I have attended other groups tournaments and events as many from K4L know.
I abide by my organizations rules, and I promote openess and sharing within my doors to maximise exposure and learning. This is nothing new to me or to those who know me. I first conversed with Ashiharakancho when he was touring North America trying to arrange for him to stop in and visit us. It didn't work out becaue of his bus accident, but this goes back over 10 years.
I won't have the exact date for 2013 until next March or April as Shihan can't confirm his exact date availability until then, but it would be great if we could coordinate and have some K4L sharing and I could host everyone at my place for the day.
