1 Part Power/Hundredfold Spirit: Another training thread
Well, I was suggested a while back to make a Workout Journal, and I liked the idea. Unfortunately, I doubt there will be much to talk about since I don't have a set in stone workout plan currently. I may include thoughts, and questions I have though.
Anyway, here is a brief overview.
I view all parts of martial arts important, whether it be Kata, sparring, self defense, etc. I love the "combat sport" aspect, and sparring with friends of course, and that's probably what I will talk about the most. But do know that without the other aspects of martial arts, I feel a combat sport would just be like any other sport I don't do. I should also mention, for being an adult, I am very underweight, about 48 kg. This has been a problem for me of course, and I am working on it.
Goals:
Anyway, on to the point of my training, and tracking my progress. I will be working on specializing in SPEED and DEFENSE. In my, and a few friend's opinions, training in this is for the best. I tend to want to fight passive-aggressively, but I have so many flaws in my defense that I am either being the one run down, or I am doing a blitz that will be overpowered. I cannot fight power with power, and I have no desire to.
The things I must improve right now in my opinion are:
- Mobility/footwork// Gracefulness.(These include evasion, being able to move fluently with my techniques.)
- Explosiveness/Burst Damage/Countering (Not going in and having a slug fest, but being more precise with my offense)
- Reading(Work on concentration so I can bring everything together.)
I have been and will continue looking into things like Sabaki, and the ways boxers can move and strike at the same time, and of course, some strength and stamina training.
I don't really have much of a plan currently, and ANY tips would be appreciated.
Finally, in the spirit of everyone here I think I will say something that I've avoided saying up to this point. I may not be from any Kyokushin background, but I'm hoping it's okay now that I've learned the meaning.

KSR, well done starting a training log, putting your goals down for all to see, and for putting yourself out there Only good things can happen from that.
I think you have the right idea in looking into sabaki - from what I see in the video I think this is exactly where you should be focusing. You seem to have long arms and legs, you seem pretty light on your feet - all those things will work to your advantage. Be patient - it takes time, but with focused work it will come

Thanks for the encouragement sandman.

Okay, I have a partial plan down now for specific training to do outside of the dojo. I am in the dojo training very frequently, so I will leave out a lot of that conditioning unless it becomes noteworthy. One thing worth mentioning is that the other week we did bag training for a few minutes. Typically, this never happens. In those few minutes I was completely burnt out. This has inspired a big part of the training on my own time now.
Overall, the plan is to condition my body a bit better. The typical pull ups, crunches, push ups, and running can be included here. Things that are specifically geared toward my mobility will be in the form of shadowboxing, and Sabaki drills.
My mind must also be trained as well. I mean this in terms of changing my mindset while fighting. I'm often overwhelmed and very narrowminded when it comes to sparring. I know my weaknesses yet try to ignore them and hope for the best. Yes, this has helped make me stronger through endurance. But changing my thoughts from just trying to force openings to looking at what's beatings me, why it is, and how to stop it should become my priority. That's how I will improve defensively. I always get destroyed by the same exact things, yet never learn. That's just not how I am as a person, so I have no idea why I wouldn't realize this sooner.
Today:
-Ran a mile in around 7 minutes. Haven't been much of a runner...ever. I will work on this.
-Did about a Half hour of off and on Shadowboxing and Kata.
-Spent a good 15 minutes on footwork drills. Mostly things I've learned from watching -Sabaki videos and some boxing ones.
-Did 2 sets of crunches. I have to strengthen my weak point. I cannot take body shots.
-A little stretching. I should work on this a bit more since flexibility has been an issue at times.

OSU KSR, good to see that you have decided to post your endeavours here! Welcome to the club, keep it up and let us know of your progress.
By the way, I am also not from Kyokushin, but I feel that this forum is just right for what I do and what U want to reach. After all, it's Karate, and we all seek Kyokushin (= the ultimate truth) in everything we do, right?

Well, besides a bit more running and conditioning, I've had a lot of rounds for fighting this week.
Notably, earlier this week someone actually noticed and pointed out my improved footwork. I was able to challenge him a lot better because of this. Normally I am severely overwhelmed by his strong defense, but forcing him into my rhythm was quite the equalizer.
However, as I've discovered in another fight, I still have a bit of sloppiness and a long way to go. My attempts at pivoting were horrible. I would lose balance and become wide open. Trying to get into the opponents backside by circling (using what I've seen in Sabaki videos)got me counter hit with a side kick quite a few times. And last, a few times when I was on the defensive my feet became almost directly lined up in a North to South looking way, and it took everything I had to just keep my balance.
More practice and time for adjustments.

Sorry for the late response FredInChina. I am currently training in a form of Okinawan Karate.
Anyway, I have been lacking updates because last month I was injured pretty badly in terms of injuries I've experienced (no idea what the actual problem was). It took a few weeks to recover, so now I'm getting back into things at a steady pace. I will probably be posting more frequently in the near future.

No idea the specifics. I saw a doctor and it wasn't anything extremely bad. But my entire lower abdomen, lower back, and legs were in extreme pain after getting hit badly. Couldn't lift my legs for a few days. Had to get my kidney's checked due to some odd cramping issues. When I lifted my leg at times I'd get a sick feeling. Took a few weeks to fully recover.

Good luck, and remember: Slow and easy is the ticket! You'll progress very fast if you keep it on steady.
May I ask which kind of Okinawa Karate you are doing, and where? How long have you been doing it, and which grade are you on? Perhaps I overread something...
