Thai Pads / Arm Guards
I'm purchasing new arm guards for the dojo. In your opinion or experience, should you be able to place your handle under the handle as well as over it? For example, when holding pads Thai style they are over the handle like this:
(Picture shamelessly and randomly borrowed from The Muay Thai Institute)
But we also sometimes train holding the pads on the outside of the forearm... Like crossed in from of the abdomen for front kicks.
Does anyone else ever use pads in this manner (outside of forearm)?
I recently bought pads where you cannot fit your hand around the handle (too tight). You can hook your fingers over basically... Even when holding thai style, I like to grab the handle. So I'm wondering if I'm going to keep ordering different pads and find the same thing.
Please also offer suggestions on pad types and brand. Keep in mind I'm buying 20-30 sets. :-)
Osu!
PS. A long time ago we use to use pads like this from Tiger Claw:
We kicked our partner with their hands up in regular fighting stance... Maybe thai pads were never mean to be held this way... but I have always had pads with handle that could be held like that.

Well Bobh, I'd be happy to try out whatever you buy. Just send them to me - I'll PM the address. After a year or so I'll send you a full report.
Actually, I'm interested in this topic too...

I rarely use the heavy pads with the hand under the handle. Lighter pads could be used, and that's when I bought ones similar to these. http://www.tigerclaw.com/images/T/10...0Shield_sm.png
I must say that I have only used them rarely, and wouldn't buy them again.
I like the Fairtex brand most for arm pads, as they have a slightly more "human flesh" feel, but they are more expensive than the feel alone would dictate. My ThaiSmai gear is still going strong, after a lot of use, and the prices are much better than Fairtex, especially with a wholesale account. (Easy to set up as well.)
20-30 pairs is a lot of money though. Have you considered splitting the heavy pads with mantis pads? Sets up dual stations for adults, and easier for the kids.

ThaiSmai is this? http://www.thaismai-tsm.com/
Mantis pads are like focus mitts I gather? That's a good idea... plus they are less expensive. I use squeaky focus mitts for little kids
PS. Thinking more about this, I think that we had been compensating for not having focus mitts, suitcase shields, etc. I think I might opt for variety and train circuit-like with Thai, Manits/Focus, Shield, etc.

Just a tangent, but the pad holder in the photo is my old MT instructor, Bunkerd Faphimai (formerly Fairtex). That brings back some pleasant memories, thanks

Just like that! I chose the velcro, as it's easier to training with a partner vs the buckles, which are bit rough on occasion.
Mantis pads have a curve, making them easier to hold, and satisfying to hit. http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/titleboxing_2081_183644119
Pleased you like it.

For many people you only need one thai pad and one focus mitt instead of two thai pads. I actually found this out the first time I trained with some Thai trainers some years back watching them do this. Now if you're doing pad works that include kicks and knees for a "Brock Lesnar" I'd go with the two thai pads.
I'm thinking of ordering my first "air" type of thai pads and trying them out to see if they help much at all. I'm also a fan of the concaved in "cobra" thai pads or whatever you want to call them.

Check this out! It's a hybrid mitt/pad. I'm very tempted... and a good price it seems!

Hay Bob, thank you for that Chuck Liddel focus mit tape.
As for Chuck. I wish He'd have used his legs to better effect.

I ordered a pair last night. Let's compare notes! I'm hoping this pad can be the best of both worlds...

PowerofOne has kicked up my own desire to get out and see more of our members next year. Not sure If I'll be able to head your way just yet, but my goal for 2010 is ten Dojo that are listed on K4L, with reports on each.

They have a good sale on some fighting sports gear too so I bought myself those title MMA focus mitts, fighting sports shorts, Twins lumpinee baseball cap (only $9.99), and a good deal on a groin/ab protector from fighting sports 50% off, woohoo. Merry Christmas to me, ho ho ho!
