Is foot stomping allowed?
Hi everyone, I know that direct knee strikes or stomping to the knee is usually illegal in knockdown karate. But is stomping to the foot allowed? or standing on the foot while in close range to stop the opponent from running away so that you can punish him a bit more? It kinda happened at the dojo and a few of us just stood there wondering.... And also is there a pdf? or written version of the rules for Shinkyokyshin tournaments? Curious... Osu.
Thanks in advance...

It is not only allowed, but also common practice in some formats of GoJuRyu kumite.
Very surprising the first time someone (Dent) does it to you...
In some vids of Morio Higaona, you can see him catch the foot of his opponent and squeeze with his toes while ramming his shin into his opponent's one.

Great question Jadefist - I've often wondered the same thing, but never thought about it at the right moment to ask someone

I don't think stomping the foot is allowed, in the same way that you can get a penalty for attempting to injure the opponents fingers.
Although, you could "accidentally" step on the opponents lead foot, preventing him to move away.

i'll give it a go in the next tournament if i can... not consciously ofcourse... orelse, while i look down for the stomp... there goes the jodan mawashi to my head. But yeh i have been stepping on the foot so they can't run away for a good upper cut to the gut
I didnt know you can't strike to fingers... i'm been striking to wrists and elbowing shoulder joint just to add a few more weird and wonderful techniques

Pressing the toes into the in-step during a foot stump is such an exhilirating feeling! A Goju Ryu speciality (feels even better when performed by Higaonna Sensei ).

Don't quote me on the finger thing. In the rule sets I have read, any attack to joints (e.g. kicking the knee) or deliberately attempting to injure the other opponent is usually not allowed. Your organization may do things differently.

Stomping is difficult to do. Stepping is less obvious, and less likely to get you into trouble in that grey area of rules. Foot sliding onto an opponent is a valuable skill. There is also a nasty little side technique for a bonus, but I'm not giving that away!

My brother did a Muay Thai fight against Anthony Hamlett (who also fought Royler Gracie twice) years ago and all Hamlett could do was stomp on my brother's feet from the clinch while my brother out kneed, out punched, and out kicked..fight went the distance and Anthony got the decision ..."Coincidentally", the fight promoter was Dennis Hallman (ufc fighter) who also was Hamlett's training partner.
My brother's feet weren't that injured by the foot stomps, neither, it was more of a distraction for him then anything so IMHO foot stomps are more of a last resort or to set up for other techniques. Now, with some gnarly heavy boots, stilletos, etc...and stomping, smashing, grinding I could see it hurting but barefoot? I'm not so sure it's the greatest thing to do but it can work not that hard from the clinch (watch early Marco Ruas fights).

I don't stomp, but I do pin! I'm a heavy girl, and if someone keeps running away or kicking, sometimes I'll catch their foot under mine so I can get inside their guard and start punching.
One of the most recent times I did that, however, the nidan I "pinned" did... something... and used my momentum and balance to throw me just with his foot under mine!

There are a couple, but I don't show this one often. Somebody will try it, and somebody else will get hurt. Some tools are better in your own box.

Make sure to provide a description of it in your will and leave it to Fred.

Osu! 'Uke steps on tori's foot' is a pretty classic setup for judo's . That may well have been what was done to you.

I have found that stepping on my opponents feet distracts them from their preset strategy and often disturbs the rhythm of their foot work..........it can also set up for a nice sweep or front leg kick, during the hasty retraction of the foot.
the more experienced folks can over come this however, and can make you pay dearly!! LOL!!
