K4L interview with kru paulo tocha
so here's the interview i had promised with legendary kru paulo tocha:
i will be denoted as G and kru tocha as KT
G:hello kru tocha my first question to you what was your motivation to start muay thai?
KT:to learn the most effective martial art, i had seen all and nothing really impressed me , unless used with streetfighting skills, when i saw muay thai and later tried it , it was real, perfect , specially the way it used to be in Asia where i lived then.and the willpower to get even
G:so what led to the decision to go to thailand which at that time was reluctant to accept anyone non-thai?
KT:i was invited to join a special gym , a factory of champions, my trainers trainer saw me fight specially in China, it was a great moment , they invited me to fight and learn with them after my win.
they said i had good skills and wanted me to develop more into their way, which was an experience of a lifetime .
G:the character paco made you loved in the heart of martial artists all around, what were your experiences filming for bloodsport?
KT:Bloodsport was the start of the MMA revolution, where all styles in those days came together to represent, it was a great time, filming and experience which in return led to millions of viewers getting to see Muay thai and a normal guy kicking ass, and they all saw the reality of my performance, for those days, i gave it my heart and it showed on film, all i wanted was to represent, i even wore my gym name SOR.THANIKUL on the shorts.
i didn't try to invent another style or mix , i stayed real and traditional, the right way , i gave back on film what my Masters taught me, within the limitations of film-making, i was one of the actors, the star was JCVD, he had to win , its his movie, he was great in it , an excellent performance for him also. the whole movie was great , much more realistic specially in those days, as an actor i always believe in making it realistic, even though in those days that was very difficult .
G:after bloodsport and several other movies based on muay thai, muay thai has become very popular what are your thoughts on that?
KT:Muay thai is the Science , the way of the warrior, its use is for survival and war, later it was made into a sport , its always developing and thats why two thousand years later its still supreme in combat, now as a a sport its doing very well and showing the world its art, but in the USA, we have had a lot of problems in the beginning specially due to jealousy of the other martial arts, but now we finally have our own sanctioning bodies etc, in the world of MMA, muaythai is supreme in the stand up, it will always be like that.
G:nowadays i have seen due to MMA and movies that when a beginner is to start muay thai he feels he'll now become a fighting machine ,an invincible person, what do you say to this??
KT: ok, this is real simple , we are a fighting art, in other words, in order to learn this Science, we have to fight, simple , it all starts with that experience and concept, sooner or later if you practise muay thai , the student will develop a fighting style , and will practise and spar, until he gets into full contact , no pads , that's really Muay thai , the way , real way , simple hand to hand, it all depends how one is taught, thats the difference btw , all these fly by night jack of all trades now teaching Muay thai and MMA, actually they know very little about Muay thai and the art and science of it, they need to get humbled and learn properly over time.
G:talking about MMA,UFC.how positive has it been for full contact styles like muay thai, kyokushin etc.??
KT:the MMA has taken Muay thai in America to another level and the use of it in the cage or ring has been incredibly effective , now imagine those fighters learn it correctly , not in a few months or years,,, like they doing , imagine in 5 years, its going to be great.
G:also with MMA styles like BJJ have also seen enormous popularity but also i have seen practitioners of striking arts seeing all the throws and grappling say "what about doing BJJ/judo more with my art,how will it be??",it sometimes in other words translates that he/she seems to be losing faith in what he is been learning because he sees all those flashy throws and chokes aren't there in his art, what do you suggest here?
KT:its about mixing styles, why not?? it all works it's about how u put it together, one practise's a single move a million times and it works once to save you or to continue the fight , why not use it again, to try is good , if it works for the person, it was all worthwhile the hard work and trying, its like driving, but try to follow the rules.
my Master teacher's name is ARJHAN/ Master Pairrut Lavillas, aka - Peng SORTHANIKUL. our gym had 21 world champions in Bangkok, lumpinee and Rajadmoen stadiums, about 55 international champs , all taught by the Master with different KRU'S/ Teachers working the pad work , specially KRU TOY and KRU MUEG my 2 best trainers you taught me and gave me so much.
G: ok my final question is ,kru we live in a world that is developing in the technological sense very fast, where things have become simpler but we see that people in the physical sense arent ready to train hard, they feel that a martial art if strict and hard is military and not for them, the good old strict training which made you and others like us trust ourselves in combat seems to be inhuman for some
in this context how do you place the future of muay thai and other full contact arts where hard training is the only way up??
KT:we will all be long gone and Muay thai will still be supreme, its been 2000 years we are nothing compared to it , we are just messengers of the art, it will never die, Muay thai developed out of conflict, real , unfortunately we continue to fight one another in whatever sphere,, the arts will continue, and the spirit will live on, to do it right is the right way , it can always be adapted to suit those who just want to learn slowly , so be it , let them learn at their pace, as long as it's taught truthfully.,, with love .
Thats why we don't believe in the belts and the system with it , the only belt we want is the Champions belt.
Muay thai is about oneself, to make oneself a better person , to know whats right and wrong, its full of Karma etc, much deeper than people think or know.
G:thank you so much kru tocha for sparing time it has indeed been an honor and a wonderful time conducting the interview for myself and other members of the forum who always love reading idea's from great legends like you, thank you for giving me the opportunity.
KT:hope u got something good, GOD BLESS , . Happy 2011 to all the martial artists who believe in LIFE.
one - 1 is positive ,2011 we going to have a great year.
