Tutorial: How to post a picture/image in a forum post
Osu!
There are 4 ways to post a pic that I know of (if there are others, please feel free to tell us all)
1 - Pics from the web, best practice.
- Find a pic on the web
- copy the pic url, it will look like this: http://wwww.whicheverwebsite.com/the...opostonK4L.jpg & will be found at the top of most browsers.
- open the "post a pic" box by clicking on the icon in the editor menu (second line, between the quotes & the e-mail link)
- Paste the pic url & click ok
You are done!
2 - Pics from your camera or computer.
- You need to create an account with an album website like photobucket (I am using photobucket), Image Shack, or maybe Flickr, etc... there are plenty of these free services to keep and share images. (it is easy, quick & you only have to do it once -------- However, don't delete the pics ot the account, otherwise all your posts ok K4L and elsewhere will be ruined)
- upload & save your pics on the servers of your provider
- Copy the direct pic url that the server created for your pic
- then follow the rest of the instructions in (1)
3 - Pics from the web - This is the recipe when (1) does not work.
( please don't abuse it to save K4L storage and bandwidth.)
- Find a pic on the web
- select the pic and a little bit of text before or after it
- copy the selection by right clicking on the additional piece of text selected (it does not work if you copy by right clicking on the pic or if you use "copy image".
- paste into the K4L editor
- trim the extra text & garbage around your pic
You are done!
4 - small Pic from your computer
- click the attach a file to your post (the paper clip icon in the editor menu); this will open a pop up window that tells you what files are allowed.
- Upload your image following the instructions.
- I do not recommend this method because the aggregate number and weight you can attach is limited, as is the size of each attachment.
What to do if my pic is too large:
- For Windows users: BEFORE you upload your pic like in (2) right click on the image file, open with microsoft office picture manager, select edit pictures, resize, predefined width & height, 640x480, save as mylargepicnowsmaller.
- Go to (2) and follow instructions.
- Apple users ought to know how to do that! LOL
What to do if I have many pics to post
- You can post up to 4 pics in a forum post (that includes smileys)
- To add more pictures, consecutive posts are, if not allowed, at least tolerated.
- If you really have A LOT of pics that you would like to share with the community, K4L offers you the possibility to create and share your picture album.
Looking forward to viewing all the members pictures in the forum
Good posting everyone
osu!
PS: Some photo storage providers allow you to upload directly from your mobile phone and also post automatically all uploads to K4L...
But I guess those in the know don't need a tutorial!

Cheers Fred, for this tutorial. Hopefully we will see much more imagery here on K4L in the future.
Now, kids, I have to talk about something really boring, on the topic of copyright infringement and hotlinking. It's highly relevant, because many people are not aware of the etiquette and rules when sharing pictures online.
"Hotlinking" is the practice of taking a picture from one site, and show it on a different one, by simply pointing to the image on the first site. For example, I could take a picture from yoursite.com and show it here on K4L, simply by wrapping it in [IMG] tags. It would show up perfectly, but every time someone loads the picture on K4L, it would in fact be called from yoursite.com, thus using it's bandwidth and server capacity. This rather popular solution goes by another name; "bandwidth theft". While it is quite illegal without a permission, few people have actually been punished for it. Some providers remedy this by replacing the image by something else, which will of course then still show up at K4L, as the piece of code still points to the address on yoursite.com.
However, just because the risk of legal consequences is practically non-existent, doesn't mean you should do it. Please be considerate of the original provider. Good etiquette is to download the image (by right-clicking and choose "Save image") and upload it at a image host or server. In some cases, it might be enough to wrap a link around the image, directing you to the site of the original provider (yoursite.com).
A different, but similar, issue is copyright infringement. Surprisingly often, you are not actually not allowed to take content (including images) from a different site. This is always the case of original content (such as images produced by someone else). The argument is always that the internet is considered "public domain" and thus "free", however this is not true. Always assume the content is protected by copyright.
What you could do, is to contact the provider and ask for permission. At the very least, you should write a title-tag or caption as close to the image as possible (for example: "Photo taken by John Doe at johndoephotography.com").
Okay, boring stuff over. Now you can go out and play!

Osu!
Thank you for this information, Nix! Some of us grey-hairs are not conversant with all the ins and outs of nettiquette. I am certainly the biggest culprit here.
(I also think this is going to make K4L a lot less spontaneous. )
