Comparison of styles' tournament rules

I thought it might be interesting to collect into one thread a description of tournament rules from all the styles represented in this diverse forum. I have never been to tournaments hosted by most of our member styles, and I'd like to learn more.

Tell us your style, (and if relevant, organisation - eg Kyokushin, IKO1, or "Seido").
What techniques are allowed?
What techniques are prohibited?
How long are bouts?
How are draws resolved?
Do tournaments ever proceed to tameshiwari? etc.

an anything else that makes your style "stand out" from the crowd!

Great idea Seienchin bear I'm interested in this myself. I'll start, although I believe our rules are the same as most kyokushin organizations.

Style: Yoshukai Karate
Organization: World Yoshukai Karate and Kobudo Organization

We have two overall classes of competition: knockdown and semi-knockdown. The only differences are the required protection and the round lengths, which I'll explain in more detail below.

What is Not Allowed
Punches or any other hand strikes to the head (including elbows)
No strikes of any kind to the throat, back, joints or groin
No grabbing
No pushing, although this is often overlooked if followed immediately by a legal technique
No joint locks or throws
No biting

What is Allowed
All punches, hand strikes and elbow strikes to anywhere below the neck, except at illegal targets mentioned above
All kicks and knees to anywhere, including the head, except for illegal targets mentioned above
Sweeps

Scoring
Ippon (one point) wins the fight. Ippon is given for a technique delivered with such force that the receiver cannot fight within 3 seconds of having been hit

Waza ari (half point) is given for a technique delivered with force enough to stun or momentarily hurt the opponent. 2 waza ari score within the same round equals ippon and fight is over. Waza ari do not carry over from one round to the next.

Hantei (judge's decision) The judges can call the fight after completion of a round for one of the fighters based on overall fight dominance. If one fighter has scored a waza ari, that does not guarantee he will win the decision. In the case of a draw the fight goes to extension rounds.

Rounds
In knockdown - the regulation round is 3 minutes, the first extension is 2 minutes, the final extention is 1 minute.
In semi-knockdown - the regulation round is 2 minutes, and both extension rounds are 1 minute

Protective Gear
In knockdown - mouthpiece and groin cup are optional for male fighters. No other gear is allowed for male fighters. Breast protectors are allowed for female fighters.

In semi-knockdown - shin guards, hand protection and head gear are required in addition to the mouthpiece and groin cup. Breast protectors also optional for female fighters. For younger kids' divisions, chest protectors worn outside the uniform are generallly provided.

Tameshiwari
For major tournaments like Superfights, tameshiwari is used (knockdown only - not semi knockdown) to pre-determine ties, as well as to qualify for participation. The tameshiwari is done before the fighting, just one time. In the event that the tameshiwari is also a tie, the decision goes to the lighter fighter.

Hopefully I got all that right - Hangtime and Yoshukai, please feel free to jump in if I got something turned around

It's a 3 count; granted, everyone counts at a different speed, it should be (I believe) 3 seconds.

Chest protectors are at the discretion of the fighter; most do not. Personal opinion (and that which is supported by quite a few female fighters) -All things should be equal; if Fighter A has a hard protector, Fighter B should either be provided one or Fighter A should adapt. Again, $0.02...

Tamashiwari is also done as a means to "qualify" to fight. If you can't break the boards, you *proooooobably* shouldn't be on the tatami, lol.

Good Post Seienchin. Good response Sandman.

Thanks for the clarifications Hangtime. I thought long about the ippon scoring time - I knew it was either 3 or 5. Doh!

I've made the appropriate changes in the original post.

Ashihara Karate Kaikan

The Ashihara rules (or sabaki rules, as they are affectionally called) are currently undergoing a period of revision. The main things are in place, but some details such as the scoring system are still being tested. I shall explain it as it was used at the Sabaki Challenge Spirit in Bucharest this November, and ommit the scoring and penalty system — it is also similar to the Kyokushin system with waza-ari and ippon, with some few tweaks. One argument was, that if two fighters both manage to score a waza-ari, it's basically a golden goal, where the one with the lucky shot wins. Some tournaments have practiced to let the scoring difference decide, so one waza-ari each cancel eachother out. Another tweak is the time between a waza-ari and ippon, which may be as long as ten seconds. None of this is official, so don't take my words as truth — I only relay what has been discussed and tested at tournaments I've participated in.

It generally stays close to the original Kyokushin rules, so I will only go briefly over the basics.

Full contact techniques are allowed everywhere
- including the back
- excluding the spine and joints
- excluding punches and elbows to the head

You may grab your opponent with one or two hands and deliver a technique
- such as grabbing the neck and kneeing the face
- you must release your opponent after a few seconds
- you may not continue to grab your opponent without following up on it

You may grab the opponent with one or two hands to perform a takedown or throw
- however, when grabbing with two hands, the hands should be on the same side (i.e., no clinching)
- a throw must be followed by a successive technique, to be eligble for a point. You get points for the throw, but if you cannot follow up, it is useless
- a throw must not be over hip height (no tomoe nage)
- a downed opponent may still score on a standing one

You may use any other method to take down your opponent
- such as sweeping or hooking the leg

Judging and decision
There are three flag judges and one main referee on the mat. Fights go for three minutes, with a one minute extension round. If hantei is a tie after the second round, the vote of the referee is deciding. A fight can no longer be decided by tameshiwari or weight, only the performance on the mat counts.

The goal of the rules was to make it more dynamic and more suited for sabaki. The old rules unfortunatelly resulted in a lot of messy fighting, as a cornered fighter could simply grab the opponent with both hands and wait for the break, and as jogai had a greater consequence, many fighters tried to score easy points by pushing, pulling or fooling the opponent off the fighting area. Jogai is now only penalized, if a fighter withdraws off the mat. If one or both fighters exits the fighting area, but are still fighting, no one is penalized. If the fighters do not immediately return to the fighting area, the fight is stopped, and fighters are returned to their places.

While the old rules suited me well, I must confess that the new version is far superior. It is much more dynamic, and more interesting to watch. The fighters are active all the time, and we see some really great sabaki.

Interesting, how often did they have to use this new rule at the tournament you were part of?

Another tweak is the time between a waza-ari and ippon, which may be as long as ten seconds.

I think that to be fair to everyone, you have to have a pre determine time before calling an Ippon,
Usually you count in your head, 1001, 1002, 1003 and you bring the flag from waza ari position to Ippon on 1004

Full contact techniques are allowed everywhere
- including the back
- excluding the spine and joints
- excluding punches and elbows to the head

Similar to existing rules in IKO and WKO

You may grab your opponent with one or two hands and deliver a technique
- such as grabbing the neck and kneeing the face
- you must release your opponent after a few seconds
- you may not continue to grab your opponent without following up on it

That rule is the most difficult to judge..”what’s a few seconds? A fighter was disqualified about a month ago at the 15th North American Championship (Shinkyokushin). He did a 2 hands clinch (maybe 1.5 seconds) and broke his opponent nose. Again, to be fair for every fighter you either accept or forbid grabbing the neck.

I am not familiar with these rules since there are not parts of (IKO, WKO). Do you score a waza ari or an Ippon like in Judo when you have a successful throw?

Judging and decision
There are three flag judges and one main referee on the mat. Fights go for three minutes, with a one minute extension round. If hantei is a tie after the second round, the vote of the referee is deciding.

Where are the judges placed? Around the fighting areas (corners) or at the "shomen" table?

While the old rules suited me well, I must confess that the new version is far superior. It is much more dynamic, and more interesting to watch. The fighters are active all the time, and we see some really great sabaki.
Glad that you like the new rules

Thank you for sharing this information, I was not familar with Ashihara Karate Kaikan rules. I will now go online and "Open my horizons"

Osu All,

We generally have two types of components within our kumite section of tournaments - full contact/sabaki and clicker-semi contact sparring.

SABAKI COMPETITION RULES - ASHIHARA KARATE INTERNATIONAL

A. CONTEST STRUCTURE
1. Preliminary matches will consist of one 3 minute round.
2. Semi-final and final matches will consist of two 2 minute rounds with a one minute rest period.

B. FIGHTING RULES
1. Hand or elbow strikes to the neck, back and face areas are not permitted.
2. All kicks and strikes to the groin are not permitted.
3. All punches and elbow strikes to the body is allowed.
4. Kicks to the head, body, legs and sweeps to the legs are permitted.
5. Fighters may only grab the opponents shoulder or behind the neck to execute knee kicks, sweeps or throwing techniques but must release his hold immediately following the technique.

C. PENALTIES
1. Any fighter who deliberately and intentionally strikes his opponents face, neck or groin will be disqualified forthwith.
2. If a fighter accidentally strikes his opponent in the forbidden areas, he will receive a penalty. Three penalty amounts to immediate disqualification.
3. If a fighter continually moves outside the fighting area to avoid attack, he will receive a penalty.
4. A fighter who repeatedly grabs and holds his opponent with both hands will receive a penalty.

D. SCORING
1. A fighter can win either by a knockout or decision.
2. Winning by a knockout: If a fighter is downed and cannot rise after five seconds a knockout is declared.
3. Winning by points: Any legal techniques that connects and instantly downs his opponents so that his hand and knee touches the mat or if he doubles over will be scored as one-half point. One-half point will also be scored for a single leg-sweep or throwing technique only if it is immediately followed by a controlled kick or punch. If a successful throw or sweep is executed and is not followed by a controlled punch or kick, a one sixth point will be awarded. A fight can be won if a fighter scores two one-half points and his opponent has no points.
4. Winning by a decision: If no points are scored in a match, the fight will be awarded on the basis of relative spirit and technique excellence of the participants.

SEMI CONTACT COMPETITION RULES -CLICKER

A. CONTEST STRUCTURE
All matches will consist of one 1˝ minute round (fighting time).

B. F I G H T I N G RU L E S
1. Hand or elbow strikes to the neck, back and head areas are not permitted.
2. All kicks and strikes to the groin/breast are not permitted.
3. All punches (semi-contact) to the body are allowed.
4. Kicks (semi-contact) to the head and body are permitted.
5. Kicks to the legs are not allowed.
6. Throwing and sweeping techniques are not allowed.

C. PENALTIES
1. Any fighter who deliberately and intentionally strikes his/her opponents face (head), neck or groin/breast will be disqualified forthwith.
2. If a fighter accidentally strikes his/her opponent in the forbidden areas, he/she will receive a penalty. Three penalties amount to immediate disqualification.
3. If a fighter continually moves outside the fighting area to avoid attack, he/she will receive a penalty.
4. A fighter who repeatedly grabs and holds his/her opponent with both hands will also receive a penalty.

D. SCORING
A fighter can win either by points or by decision.

1. Winning by points:
a. Three points will be awarded for any kick to the head. The match will be stopped and the points awarded.
b. One point will be awarded for any kick to the body. A maximum of three punches may be executed then the competitor must either break or do a kick technique. The fighter with the most points at the end of the match will be declared the winner.
c. For any technique to be awarded a point, it is required that the contestant deliver it with good form and balance.

2. Winning by decision:
a. In the event of the match ending in a draw, ie. both contestants having the same score, an extension of one minute will be allowed.
b. If both fighters have the same amount of points at the end of the extension, the fight will be awarded on the basis of relative spirit and technical excellence of the participants. The fighter who did not adhere to the 3 punch break rule will then automatically be at a disadvantage.

3. Winning by default:
If any fighter obtains a penalty his/her opponent will receive one point in their favour.

Refereeing Procedure

With clicker, we make use of 3 corner judges (seated) who scores points using tally-counter (clicker) and a referee who just manages the fight. Any two judges gives the win. Referee has no say.

In SABAKI we have experimented with 3 judges- but have opted to use 4 to keep it in line with the general norm to make everone understand. Most probably, we will at some stage move to 3 as we found that it makes for "faster" decision making with lesser draws.

AshiharaKaicho will be better able to clear it up for his organization, and Nix for his, but I believe that both major groups only allow grabbing with both hands on one side of the body. This would disqualify the MT clinch.

Thank you both - the grab that we allow is a one hand grab to the neck - like a hikkake (shuto). The other hand can grab the shoulder. Generall we encourage more the shoulder grab for either kicking or a back throw.

MT style Clinching is not allowed.

Rules of the Enshin Sabaki Challenge:
http://sabaki.enshin.com/rules.html#KUMITE

FIGHTER REGULATIONS
In order to be considered as a contestant in the SABAKI CHALLENGE, an applicant must be at least 21 years of age and submit his Application, Fighter Questionnaire, Medical Certificate, Proof of Medical Insurance, Photograph, Videotape and Registration Fee no later than the application deadline.
There will be a mandatory meeting for all fighters and judges held the evening before the SABAKI CHALLENGE. Attendance at this meeting is required, and must be considered when making arrangements for coming to the SABAKI CHALLENGE.
There will be a weigh-in at the meeting the night before the tournament. Any fighter who exceeds the upper limit of his weight division will be penalized in the following manner: for each pound he is over the limit for his weight division, one point will be awarded to his opponent at the start of the match. This handicap will apply to the preliminary, quarter-final, semi-final and final rounds of the tournament.
Fighters are required to wear a mouthpiece and a groin cup. Hand or foot guards are not allowed to be worn. Taping the hands and feet is not permitted. No tape may be worn on the hands. Fingernails and toenails must be cut. All fighters must wear a karate gi (in good repair: with long pants, sleeves to the elbows, and belt).

TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE
The quarter-final and semi-final and final matches will consist of two two-minute rounds of fighting. If the score at the end of the match is tied, the fighter with fewer penalties will be declared the winner. If both fighters have the same number of points and penalties, the match will go to a judges' decision. In the event that the judge's decision is tied and the referee calls a "draw," then there will be a one minute overtime to decide the match.

KUMITE (FIGHTING) RULES
Hand or elbow strikes or head butts to the neck and face area are not permitted. Kicks and strikes to the groin are not permitted. All kicks to the legs and sweeps to the legs are allowed, with the exception of a direct blow to the front of the knee.

A fighter may grab his opponent's shoulder or gi (of arm or leg) for three seconds only while executing a technique. Hand must release hold after three seconds. A fighter may not encircle the opponent's leg with one arm, or hold the leg up with two hands. When grabbing from the front with two hands, both hands must reach from the same side of the opponent's body. Encircling the opponent's neck or torso from the front with two hands to pull him into a technique is not permitted. If both fighters are grabbing each other, creating a stalemate, the referee will break them apart immediately.

PENALTIES AND WARNINGS
Any fighter who intentionally strikes his opponent's neck or face area, or intentionally kicks or strikes to the groin will be immediately disqualified from the tournament.

If a fighter accidentally brushes his opponent's neck or face area, he will be given a WARNING.

If a fighter accidentally punches or strikes his opponent's neck or face area, he will be given a PENALTY. The second accidental strike to his opponent's neck or face area will be scored as a DOUBLE PENALTY, resulting in disqualification of that fighter. A fighter is disqualified after he receives three penalties. [NOTE: The distinction between a "brush" or "strike" to the face is the decision of the referee and/or judges.]

In the event that a fighter accidentally employs an illegal technique resulting in an injury to his opponent that the Tournament Physician rules must stop the fight, the judges will decide the fight and declare a winner. If the winner is the injured fighter and he cannot fight again, then his next opponent automatically advances to his next round. [NOTE: Only the referee, the fighter, or the Tournament Physician may stop the fight because of injury to a fighter.]

A WARNING will be issued if a fighter grabs his opponent and holds for longer than three seconds. A WARNING will be issued if a fighter continues to encircle his opponent's neck or torso with two hands. A WARNING will be called for an accidental brush to the opponent's face, or accidental groin kick. A WARNING will be given for a direct kick to the front of the knee. WARNINGs will be given if a fighter moves outside the ring or lies down in order to avoid an attack from his opponent. A WARNING will also be issued if a fighter repeatedly grabs and holds his opponent to avoid an attack or after executing a technique.

If a fighter who has received a WARNING for an accidental brush to the face, kick to the groin or direct kick to the front of the knee is called a second time for the same infraction, he will be issued a PENALTY. A third call for the same violation will result in disqualification from the match.

A PENALTY will be issued for any accidental punch or strike to the neck or face. A DOUBLE PENALTY will be given for the second accidental punch or strike to the neck or face. A PENALTY will be issued if a fighter makes full contact with a strike or a kick after his opponent is down. PENALTIES may also be issued through a series of warnings: A penalty is given to a fighter after his first three warnings, a second penalty is given after two more warnings. A third penalty is given after only one more warning. Warnings are carried forward. For example, if a fighter has two warnings and then receives a penalty for an accidental face punch, his two warnings are carried forward: therefore, he receives two penalties at once. Clearly, subsequent warnings or penalties are more heavily weighted.

All calls and decisions are at the sole discretion of the referee and judges.

SCORING
One point will be awarded to a fighter who causes his opponent to turn away after a stunning kick to the head. One point will be scored for a fighter who executes a successful sweep or throwing technique, remains on his feet, but does not follow immediately with a controlled punch or kick. The sweep must be a clean technique. In the event that a fighter executes a successful sweep or throwing technique and follows with an uncontrolled punch or kick after his opponent is down, the sweep is negated and he neither scores nor receives a penalty. It is the referee's and/or judges' decision whether or not the follow-up technique is controlled.

Three points will be awarded to a fighter who executes a sweep or throwing technique, only if he remains on his feet and follows with a controlled punch or kick. Any legal technique that doubles over the opponent will be scored three points. Any thrust, kick, strike or other legal technique that connects and instantly downs the opponent so that his hands, hands and knees or hands and hip touch the mat will be scored as three points.

Six points will be awarded to a fighter who legally downs his opponent who then cannot rise and continue after five seconds. The decision is declared a knockout and the fighter will be declared the winner.

A fighter can win his match by knockout, points or decision.
WINNING BY KNOCKOUT: If a fighter who is legally downed cannot rise and continue after five seconds, the contest is declared a knockout and the other contestant will be declared the winner.

WINNING BY POINTS
A fighter must score a total of (at least) six points in order to win on points. This score is cumulative within the match: for example, if a fighter scores three points in the first round, and then scores another three points in an the next round, he will be declared the winner. The match will be stopped when a fighter wins by points.

WINNING BY DECISION
At the end of a match, if neither fighter has won by knockout or by points, the fighter who is ahead on points will be declared the winner. If both fighters are tied on points, then the fighter with the fewest penalties will win the match. If the fighters are tied on both points and penalties, the judges will decide a victory on the basis of the relative spirit and technical excellence of the contestants.

The Tournament Director reserves the right to overturn a decision or to settle a situation not covered by these rules. The Tournament Director's decision is final.

2. The main judge shall stand in the middle, 3 meters from the center line.
3. The bout starts after the main judge has given the command: “Hajime”.
4. One bout shall last in the first and second round, two minutes

During the bout
1. During the bout if there is a full point victory, half point technique or foul made, or if a contestant steps outside the fighting area, etc., the assistant judge shall whistle and, at the same time, raise the flag. The main judge shall give the command “Yame” (stop), and make the contestants return to their positions which they had when the bout started.
2. The flag signals are as follows:
Full point victory - The judge raises the flag with the same colour as the winner, diagonally upwards.
Half point - The judge raises the flag with the same colour as the contestant who took the half point horizontally to the side.
Foul - The judge waves from side to side, with the flag with the same colour as the competitor who got the foul, diagonally downwards.
Step outside the fighting area - The judge lowers either flag diagonally touching the floor.
Draw, indecision - The judge crosses both flags in front of himself, lowering them so they point diagonally downwards.
No count or no score - The judge crosses both flags in front of himself and waves.

4. Regarding the foul, there are situations when the main judge’s decision only might be accepted as valid.
Full-point victory
1. When one of the opponents has been downed for more than three seconds or when one has given up, the Main Judge shall make a decision, return the contestants to the middle of the ring, and then have them assume their original positions.
2. The Main Judge shall check the decisions of the assistant judges and shall decide victory on the basis of the flags of more than two of those assistant judges.
Victory by decision
• At the signal to stop, the main judge shall call “yame” (halt) and shall return the contestants to their original positions.
• The main judge shall make the competitors face “Shomen” (the front), and request the assistant judges decision. Each assistant judge shall raise his flag with the same colour as the person he considers to have won, diagonally upwards. In case of a draw, he shall cross the flags in front of himself. The valid decision will be the one which has three or more of the judges (including the main referee) approval. In case there are not 3 or more judges with the same decision, there shall be draw.
• In case of a draw, there shall be an extension of the bout of 2 minutes.
• Even if, after two extensions, it is not possible to make a decision, the decision shall be made after considering the weight difference between the competitors. The lighter one shall be in advantage. The Head Judge’s permission is necessary in this case.
• In the case of a tie between men of equal weights, victory shall be awarded to the person who broke more boards in the tameshiwari.
• If the numbers of boards broken by the two contestants are equal, victory shall be awarded on the basis of the decision of the Supreme Judge. In this case, another extension may be granted.
