Ashihara Karate Videos

I find these Ashihara videos very interesting (even more so that this dojo is located very close to me). It is too bad there isn't any cooperation between IKO and NIKO because I think there are a lot of things we could learn/incorporate from Ashihara daily trainings. Even my sensei said this week that Ashihara uses much of the technique that was lost from Kyokushin 30-40 years ago when Kyokushin took a more tournament kumite direction.

I love Ashihara kata.

Azimuth,

If I were to get my hands on one Ashihara video, which one should I seek out to learn some sabaki?

OSU!

Very interesting. Thanks, Azimuth.

I love how Ashihara use the kansetsu geri and incorporate the takedown. In addition the idea of sabaki to close the distance and take the blind spot during an opponent's attack is something that could be used in Kyokushin kumite. We just don't practice it enough in my opinion.

I heard Kancho Ashihara also wrote some very interesting books on sabaki. Are any of them in English?

Two out of three where translated , but out of print for ages. (and too expensive for my opinion). I have one of them in dutch and the other in English ( "Fighting Karate" and "More Fighting Karate" )
But to be frankly i like the Enshin Book "The Sabaki Method" as much as the other and its very similar to the original Ashihara ones.

I have heard that at the end of this year Kancho Ashihara (the son) is going to publish a book. In this book he will talk about his father and the development of Ashihara Karate since his father passed away. Not sure if it also includes instructions or something.

Thanks, Azimuth.

I ordered a slightly used version of "The Sabaki Method" today for $10USD including shipping. Not a bad price I thought. Hopefully you can help out if I have questions.

OSU!
