Another fighter sidelined
Sorry to say I think I'll be joining Sublimo on the sidelines for the next few months at least and missing my first tourney of the year in March. I've been nursing a fractured rib which still ain't right and an overstretched tendon in my right arm that I did before my last tourney in November; I training this Sunday, first one back after the break and my arm is blown, can't even straighten it . If I'm honest I should have taken time out months ago but I had the tourney then my 2nd Kyu grading and just kept pushing it, (left arm is now an inch bigger than my right?) now I think it's gonna need months of rest to get better . Least the next tourney and my 1st Kyu graddings arn't until June

Oh my gosh! You are now the second one to suffer like this in only the first week of the New Year. Let us hope that no one else has this happen.
I wish you a quick recovery so that you are ready for June.
Take care!

My heart goes out to you! I wonder, does the injury stop you from attending class altogether?

Thanks all for the support - can I still train? I want to sooo badly, but at first didn't want to in case I couldn't resist - how week willed is that. My intention is to go and help out, I always help out in the kids classes so this will help work on my teaching training as it were, I've a few nice ideas that I came up with over Christmas so it will keep me involved without the risk of getting involved. Just such a frustrating thing, it's like it's not a real injury but being basically the ability to straighten or contract my arm or lift anything heavier than a cup of tea means it effects everything I do, so how do I rest it properly?

tmd - I know the feeling, a few years back when I snapped my achilles tendon during sparring I was gutted. The same thing concerned me about training too, can or should I still go to training?, what can I do? I don't think it is "week willed" I consider it a devout passion for what we are doing (or that's what I like to tell everybody). In the end I did as you are thinking, help with the kids classes (a bit of a fix) and then go home during adult training (just so I wouldn't be bumbed out).

, so how do I rest it properly?
Here's what I did when I injured my right shoulder:
With permission from my Sensei, I placed my right arm in a sling across my chest during class, and I trained with only my left arm. I did all movements using just the left side. Kata became an exercise in creativity. I had to rely on doing some interesting innovative maneuvers at times to be able to match the combinations being commanded. I did sit ups instead of push ups. I was very attentive to the sensations in my right shoulder, and if there was any suggestion that a certain movement from my left arm that irritated the right side, I would substitute a technique that did NOT cause pain. Partner work was very difficult to do, and kumite was impossible. I would go to the side, and do stance/ leg work such as various footwork, or kicking sequences during those moments.
At home, I started a recovery program focusing on strengthening all of the various muscles of my shoulders ( both of them) using very light weights ( 2 lb, 3 lb, and 5 lb weights.) Each day I did a 45 minute weight lifting session with high repetitions, and ended it with a good amount of stretching. The program on this website is similar to what I was doing. Shoulder/ Rotator cuff exercises
I focused on keeping good posture throughout the day. I became aware that I slumped my shoulders more than I should especially when I was sitting on the couch watching t.v., or reading. I usually have good posture the rest of the time. I corrected those moments when I used to put extra pressure on my shoulders by improper posture.
I iced my shoulder daily. 15 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes at night.
I ate raw pineapple to help provide the vitamin C, and other nutrients to support healing.

Like the vitamin idea - its actually the tendon that runs from my forearm up to my shoulder through the bicep so its the whole arm which is out of action, (even typing aggravates it) rather than the shoulder which I agree would be bad enough.
I actually injured this during prep for a tourey back in November (ish) and then had my 5 hour 2nd Kyu grading in December so I keep the training up but was limited to what I could do with my right arm during this time - fact is that thanks to all the training when I measured it before e Christmas (cause it looked off - not cause I'm into measuring body parts ) my bloody left arms was a full inch bigger than my right so I'm not keen to keep training either side incase I end up looking like Quasimodo (great shitaski though ).
New note: Just got back from training and think I was a help as we could break the class down a little more - fun but not Kyokushin!!
