help! for nidan grading

osu!

Im wanting to sit my nidan grading in january next year but im worrying about my 30 fights! I have problems with my asthma and if i get winded or hurt i panic coz i cant breathe properly then it brings on an attack! it happened in my shodan grading after the 14th fight but i went back on the 16th and completed them so i know that i can do it i just think i dont have very good control over my breathing if that makes sense any tips on breathing techniques during fighting? i dont think its my stamina thats a problem because i can do all the other sessions without my breathing being a problem it just seems to be in the fighting! dojo sparring im fine aswell but grading fights im like ahhh! maybe its just because im nervous about it i dont know i would be grateful for any advice on this or in general nidan training

ive had asthma all my life but ever since my old instructor taught me how to breathe and concentrate my breathing to my lower stomach the two way breathing system things have become far better. There is also this in haler called Advar you should try and get one of those it works really well. It's like you never had asthma at all that and the two way breathing should really help you i hope it does any way and all the best with your grading osu.

If your asthma is under good control, then getting winded WILL NOT bring on an attack, and if you have confidence in that, you will relax, and it will all seem so much easier.

First stop should be your doctor, or even a respiratory specialist, to ensure that your asthma is under excellent control. there are specific asthma medications that are most effective in exercise situations, none of them banned drugs in sports (at least in Australia).

A number of Australia's olympic swimmers have been Asthmatic, and it hasn't stopped them. this sounds as much a medical and psychological question as a physical training one. Fix the root cause of the problem, which is your anxiety that your asthma will trigger.

Best of luck.

I also have asthma and usually a tournament for me ends on all four on the mat with an asthma-attack, so I know that sparring/fighting can trigger an attack.
As for sparring, I developped the strategy if I feel it coming (that is if you can), move away, move around the opponent and start to breate controlled. Don't attack much, try to keepy our guard on on the chest-area (punches somewhere close to the lungs make the matter only worse) and get your breathing back.

Also like seienchin said, get to a doctor and see what he has to say.

All in all good luck!

Osu Kyokugirl,

I have a good plan, it works, I can share it with you. I will try t translate soon and send to you.
But the most important of all is start to practise everything from the very beginning, sharpen all the techniques, know explanations, applications and be physicly so fit that you wont have to worry about anybody. You cant cheat yourself, you have to be sincere to yourself, so do your best and you will enjoy each and every second of your grading. Train every day, but have 1 day per week to rest, your body will need it. Maybe you can learn more about kyokushin on that day.
Make a plan and stick to it. Then you will be able to chek your progress. Practise all you katas, kihon and do the 40 grading fight weekly, either with partners or use a punch bag if sometimes you train alone. Go running, as you need it for fight.
And believe in yourself!!!

I will send you the plan if you need hopefully sunday latest.

Good luck!
Osu, Niki
