Mauritius held its national competition last week and it was a total sucess, never had I seen so much enthusiasm !!
I think everyone should know that our fellow poster, ziyad, took part and did extremely well and made it to the semi-finals
I'm going to post the vid on youtube as soon as I get it, should be in a matter of few days

Tks, but i did not participate, ziyad did

Kyokushin established here in the 80s.
Shihan Kenny Uytenbogaardt (south africa) and Shihan Philip Moustache are the ones which regulate us, mauritius being an island, they seldom come here.
In their absence, it is sensei venkatakisnen (spelling?) and sensei Aslam jeewa which are the seniors, they are both sandan
I estimate the number of karateka to be in the hundred or so, significantly less than other martial arts in mauritius
We have about 7 to 10 dojos here, i may be missing some
Regional competitions are organised every year and national every two years
The majority of winners of the last two nationals were from the Dojo of Vacoas , where i'm training

I think That's it. don't hesitate to ask if you need something

In Mauritius we have 2 main kyokushin organisations namely IKO and WKO. The tournament mentioned for last week is for the IKO where as Shinkyokushin (WKO) held their 10th National tournament on the 3rd of August under the supervision of Norichika Tsukamoto from Japan. WKO shinkyokushin Mauritius organise their National Tournament every year and various tournaments at regional level. Every year shinkyokushin invite a Japanese expert for their annual seminar and knockdown tournament. The first to visit Mauritius were Shihans Sanpei Keiji and Miyoshi Kazuo. The Branch Chief for WKO Shinkyokushinkai in Mauritius is Sensei Aslam Jeewa and he's Yon Dan (4 Dan).

I'm surprized by the size of kyokushin in Mauritius, since it's a small countrie. Comparing to Brazil for exemple....IKO1 has aprox 25 or 30 dojos....and all the other branches have aprox the same amount (together), so we have between 50 and 60 dojos in Brazil, and we are a very large countrie ( for those who don't know, a litle bit smaler than Canada or China, and a litle bit bigger than US - without Alaska). Well guys congratulations!!! It's good to see true karate (no matter from witch organization) spreading out so well.

I have to agree. It is really impressing. How many members do you have? Do you cooperate well across the organizations?

Ohh god, I don't think I expressed myself very well.....I I mean is that Mauritius is an small country and already has 10 dojos....and I consider it A LOT!!! Comparing to Brazil that is a large countrie and has only 50 or 60 dojos ( I think it should have much more)...Mauritius has aprox 1 dojo for 126.400 people, and brazil has 1 dojo for aprox 3.116.667 people.....
Anyway....congratulations for you guys from Mauritius, and again it's good to see kyokushin spreading so well.

You expressed yourself very well, Brazilian Berseker, and I agree with you. It is impressing that there are so many dojo on Mauritius, despite its size and location.

oops, got the facts wrong,
Sensei Jeewa is operating another branch of dojos, sensei V and another one(forgot his name) are responsible for the IKO branch of dojos where I train

The many dojos were a necessity, since the only public transport here is the bus (pretty crappy ones too) and its worst considering that those heading towards most of the coastal regions are quite rare

Brazil is quite a big country, does this mean that your dojo is far from your place?

Shokei, it isn't the same tournament we're talking, this one saw Shihan Kenny being invited.I think that the one you're talking was organised by WKO.

Nix, we have about a hundred or so members, i'm not quite sure
Usually, there is little communication between the two organisations but sometimes, during m.a demonstrations, we work together

Aromaster,

I'm luck since my dojo is not far from my house....about 3 or 4 km....but since our public transportation is REALLY BAD, I normally drive to get there, or walk...
About the concentration of dojos....IKO1 and Seiwakai dojos are normally in São Paulo (the city) or in a 100 km range....
Some of IKO1 are in Rio (about 400 km from São Paulo city)....and some are in Porto Alegre (about 1000...or 1200 km from São Paulo). There is also one IKO1 dojo in Itabuna (Bahia State) about 2000 km from São Paulo.
Other branches are in other cities that belong to São Paulo State (São Paulo city is the capital of São Paulo State.....just like Quebec City is the capital of Quebec Province...)...and there are a few dojos in the State of Minas Gerais too...

Therefore, basically most of the dojos are in the Southeestern part of Brazil....

Osu!

Very nice to hear about training and competition outside of the more common areas. Thank you for the update, and well done to Ziyad!
