Great interview guys - really captures the man very well. I was lucky to spend an hour later, nearer to midnight chatting to him with the Irish contingent.

A language question: Is it that when we say "to someone's right/left", we are viewing from that someone's POV? And how do we describe the positions from our POV? And is there a difference between "to someone's right/left and to the right/left of someone?

This is a wonderful resource to now have on the site.
Thanks to Hasbeen and TMD for this.
I would encourage all who have not done so yet, to offer some positive rep for this great effort!
If you are unaware of how to give rep, PM me

And how to say it from the viewer's POV?

That was a FANTASTIC interview. It made my day!!!
If I may, just a small note about Hanshi Arneil. I have known Shihan Michael Monaco, the US Country Rep for the IFK, for many years. When I resigned from my former organization, Shihan Monaco was very kind and offered his guidance and advice. He also graciously invited me to his 10th anniversary camp, where I had the extreme pleasure of training with and learning from Hanshi Arneil. What a gentleman!!!
His karate is extraordinary. He can teach for hours or actually, days on end. But more importantly, he is a kind man with a good heart. Even though in my eyes he is a karate superstar, he spoke to me openly and honestly as an equal. He understood that I was a small independent dojo owner who shared similar roots, and welcomed me to his event and dojo with open arms. And never once, did he try to persuade me to join his group. He is a breath of fresh air, in light of the political mess that is so prevalent in karate.
Osu,
Miguel Rios

Are you saying you're not sure which is the big fat one, for the record I'm the small (er) fat one.

My question is purely about language. I now know which one is you and I am just asking if there is a way to introduce positions from the viewer's POV.

I'll take a stab at this, but keep in mind English is only my third language. I will use the picture with hasbeen, tmd and Hanshi Arneill as an example.
"tmd is to the right of Hanshi" or "tmd is on the right side of Hanshi" is a general observation, simply describing the position of tmd as you see it. Where is tmd? He is on the right-hand side of the picture.
"tmd is to Hanshi's left" or "to Hanshi's left is tmd". In this sentence, we are directly referring to Hanshi, and the position of tmd therefore depends on his relative position to Hanshi. On which side of Hanshi is tmd? He is on Hanshi's left-hand side.
Could one of you native English speakers please confirm/disprove this theory?

Osu! Nix,
Yup, I think you´ve got it.
The key is whether the position is relative to the viewer (first case above) or relative to someone actually in the photo, as in the second case (with "´s").

Thanks! I take it that "someone's left" and "the left of someone" just mean opposite directions.

Depends on which direction "someone" is facing.
