Question concerning buying used mats...

Due to a limited financial budget I was planning on buying some puzzle mats but have since found a seller for some old used 2 inch thick folding mats. However the condition of them is fair with some sights of ware and tare - cracks and rips on the sides, supposedly according to him nothing unfixable by a duct tape.

I know next to nothing about buying mats, let alone used ones. So, I’m asking the pros. Keeping in mind the description of the mats, with noticeable cracks and rips on the sides (none on the surface), what is your opinion on these mats and buying used ones for that matter?

Osu!

If these are folding mats like these: http://www.allstarmats.com/FoldingMats.gif

then I'd avoid them. They are lousy for serious training.

I agree with Dent on that one. Those mats can be good for practicing judo throws or something like that, but not for conducting a whole class on or for sparring on.

I'm assuming your using these for you Kyokushin training. If that's the case then 2 inches might be a little thick for your purposes. Have you had a chance to move around on these mats? What the price difference between buying these mats used versus buying them new. Also, if you decide to buy them make sure they are thoroughly cleaned - you don't want to get any bacterial infections.

I'd avoid anything with areas that a foot can get stuck in. I've got stuck in mats before, and the result isn't good.

I know Tatami are very expensive, but those would be my first choice. (When we get some money in.) Other than those, the puzzle mats are pretty good.
