Weight Gain for Kumite
Hello. I have a question.
I am a 36 year old man standing at 179cm, weighing 73kgs usually. How can I increase my weight? I want to increase my body weight for power and to be able to withstand more punishment when sparring or in competition. I eat three healthy meals a day, go to training at least twice a week, but never seem to be able to increase my weight. How can I do it effectively and healthily?
I hope that there is some good advice.

Osu!
In a nutshell: Multiple meals, more class time, and several hours a week of lifting heavy weights.

osu brendan!!
i would look at this another way....i am lucky to weigh 73kg a great advantage at the scales, in a drawn fight.
i would increase my kumite training and get used to being bashed, this imo is the most important thing in k.d.....1st getting used to being bashed.
2nd get your defence together......this brings confidence.
3) your ready to go!
i would try and train 3/5 times a week even if sometimes it`s not in the dojo.
stick to a balanced diet and don`t get tempted with any miracle weight gaining gear, it`s not worth it!!
by all means increase you calorie intake in a sensible way, bananas etc but i think the way forward is to train more, the more you spar, the more you get used to punishment!! by the way, it doesn`t matter how big you are if you are not conditioned to taking blows, it still hurts!!!! good luck +

Thank you! I have always believed that hard work brings results. I hadn`t been working hard enough toward the end of last year. My Monday class has quite a lot of Kumite, and I really enjoy it. I am already getting stronger since the beginning of January. I appreciate the advice as I have been worrying that my weight is a disadvantage.
Will do more! Thanks again
Osu!

Just wait till you're 40+
Gaining weight will become easier when you're getting older

Osu! Olrac,
Very true that. There might be a best-selling book in there. I can´t wait to see the before/after photos!

hehe..I used to fight muay thai at 163-168 and would walk around at 175-180 so I used to cut weight. I walk around 205'ish now(10 years or so later) and just try to keep my weight "healthy" without cutting. I think now the most I'd want to get down to is 185-190. If you really want to gain weight get some weight gainer supplements, eat more healthy proteins, add a weight lifting routine if you haven't yet. You maybe surprised with your results because muscle actually helps the metabolism burn fat but it does weigh more than fat Whatever you do don't forgo your karate and any other cardio training you're doing. Remember that typically more muscular bigger people don't move as well so there is a happy medium.
I've probably told this story before but I used to train with a guy that worked out so much he looked like a body builder(other fighters used to accuse him of doing roids all the time) but was a fairly good kickboxer even winning a title or two. Anyhow the way he would "muscle" his hooks ended up in him needing surgery because the vein(s) actually came out of the groove on his bicep. He's a cop and after that he was given the ultimatum to stay a cop or become a full time kickboxer.
To skip the details and boring story I just gave you if you want to gain weight fast gain a strong liking for dark beers.

muscle
Thanks for the advice and story. no fear of me getting that pumped. Although I need more muscle. I used to have thicker legs because of soccer. I will train constantly and build from there. I will look at the weights again. At present I don`t do any.

Weight doesn't matter. It's what you do with it that counts! I would focus on maximasing the striking power and technique!

Try protein supplements. Just eating food is not enough. Have a shake of low fat milk mixed with whey protein powder after training.

I've fought open tourneys at 50kg and at 100kg. Weight matters.

Let's say that being equally ignorant, but bigger lessens the overall damage!

Full-body weight training 3x a week, plenty of meat and milk, and sleep at least 8 hours a night. I went from about 66kg to 90kg in a few years doing just that.

I read a lot about the subject, because I'm 70kg on 184, one year ago I was 60kg... It went up after I started eating 5 meals per day, but it's almost impossible to get enough calories while eating clean, at least when you are not used to eating, what you probably are as a "skinny" guy like me. I just can't get in more than 3500 calories per day while eating clean... If you train a lot that's not enough to gain weight.
I started doing Rippetoe's Starting Strength and will add 1 litre milk per week until I'm on GOMAD (gallon of milk a day). Squats and Milk. Starting strength is:
Day1
3x5 Squat
3x5 Bench Press
1x5 Deadlift
Day2
3x5 Squat
3x5 Overhead Press
5x3 Clean
Starting Strength Wiki
What do you think about that BigAl (and others with experience)?
