Yup. I'd been burned by my insurer before, where they didn't cover a Kumite injury. No problem. They want the money, but to get selective on when they pay out? I'll find a way to use that against them. Bicycle accidents are covered.

That is so funny. They must think a few of your dojo mates are named "self"

Quick story... I went to the doctor after not being able to put weight on my big toe for a couple of months. Firstly, the doctor looked at me sideways after I told him it had been a couple of months. The nurse took xrays of my foot and I was left to wait. Soon the nurse came an inserted the xray films into the light-box on the wall. When the doc finally came in he said "okay, let's see what we have here." He clicked on the light to look at the films and he said (exactly) "Holy mother of man!" He asked if I were a runner and I said, "No. Karate. But I don't recall ever breaking my foot!" Well, supposedly it's been broken several times... But I've never gone to the doc for it -- just limped along -- nothing too bad. Nonetheless, I don't have any problems to speak of (not yet). :-P

Imagine how all those kicking recipients must feel.

Thanks guys,
gives a great insight into how things use to be compared with today.
On a side note I had the pleasure of attending a training session with Bernard C and witnessing the "fear/respect" as he entered the dojo - So it all makes sense now

While we all hold our breath, I have a follow-up question for Mr. H. You've not been very fortunate, injury wise. Were these injuries more common back then, and are you still haunted by them today? Thank you.

As long as it doesn't include pinup pictures. The interview of the month is a good idea. Keep it up!

Ok. I got my very first normal kyokushin related injury. :P
So, my sensei was teaching us how to block a high kick and do a low counter kick. As I blocked and push my opponents right leg way, I countered by kicking his left leg with my right foot. Unfortunately, I hit the back of his leg with toes of the left foot ... straining my left ankle. OUCH!

Plenty of that to look forward too.
I counted up my bone tally a few years ago. Seventeen fractures.
Before karate I did cycle racing though, where falling on the road at speed really spoils your day, so plaster casts and finger splints just serve as conversation starters...

Who was Sensei Nakamura? Was he Makoto the world champion or Tadashi of Seidojuku?

Osu!
Neither. Tatsuo Nakamura was an instructor at Honbu (4th Dan) before coming over and teaching in the UK for about a year (around 1978) He later married Anni, a Danish girl and returned to Japan, teaching at the vibrant Zama dojo (one of the best dojo I have ever trained at - full of energy)
He has now returned to the UK but sadly is no longer active in karate. He runs a very successful Seitai clinic in Oxford.

Thanks. That was Nakamura Tatsuo (中村辰夫) I see.
He vs Azuma Takashi Jukucho the year before he came to UK.
