Killing the liver
The liver is probably one of the most effective targets for kumite. Yesterday we did some cool drills that involved killing the liver and I'm willing to share.
1. lead punch, gyaku tsuki, shita tsuki 2x to liver
2. lead punch, gyaku tsuki, shita tsuki 2x to liver, left knee to liver
3. lead punch, gyaku tsuki, shita tsuki 1x to liver, gyaku tsuki lightly, shita tsuki 1x to liver, left knee to liver
4. lead punch, gyaku tsuki, shita tsuki 1x to liver, gyaku tsuki lightly, shita tsuki 1x to liver, left knee to liver, left mae/mawashi geri chusoku to liver
5. lead punch, gyaku tsuki, shita tsuki 1x to liver, gyaku tsuki lightly, shita tsuki 1x to liver, left knee to liver, left mae/mawashi geri chusoku to liver, right ushio geri to liver
What other "killing the liver" drills do you know of? Osu!

Whiskey shots, I've heard, can be damaging to the liver.
For quicker action, I favor multiple shovel hooks with knees and chudan mawashi geri thrown in for variety: lead, gyaku, hook, hook, hook; lead, gyaku, hook, knee, hook, hook.

The only problem I have with this is that there are too many strikes to the liver in a row. Let's say the first one gets it - the rest wouldn't as my elbow would be relocated in thet area very quickly!!

I agree. I usually work on other parts of the torso, before delivering a hard shita tsuki to the liver immediatly after a right cross, then rinse and repeat. I only hit the same spot twice if the opponent is very stationary and doesn't block. In that case, I keep hitting it untill he either blocks or bends over.

But's this will kill your own liver only

I guess I've had the good fortune to have fought with many slow learners. Multiple strikes to the same target, whether it be the thigh, liver or head work for me, either by setting up other targets or hitting the same target again and again. Sometimes you can catch that look of incredulity in their face that flashes,"Oh no you didn't."

Osu thank you for sharing! For some weird reason I thought that the liver was in the same general area as the kidneys. Good thing i'm in accounting and not your Doctor! "Oh this liver thing? You don't need two of them!"
Osu! Rep given.
It seems like the ribs protect the kidney (as much as they can against a seiken) but this would coincide with Gary's thread on impact and rib shots. To add as well the liver is unprotected in the general area that the "solar plexus" is.

hidari chudan mawashigeri -> hidari shitazuki -> other combo
What about Kurbanov style?
- hidari shitazuki -> ushirogeri to the liver
Ryu Narushima style
- snappy hidari jodan mawashigeri(fake) -> hidari shitazuki to the liver

Oh yeah, definatelly the ushiro geri. It's powerful, and the heel can dig itself deep into the body. Problem is, it's often easy to predict. Setting it up as a fake jodan ushiro mawashi kake geri works well, because the opponent will guard his head.

I was just thinking the same thing!!! I have a friend I used to spar with that spars near 100% and has hardly any control unfortunately but is very good. Fortunately I never had to compete against him because he can do a jump spinning back kick and land it when he's up close to you...I've been doubled over a few times by it. I can say I have never had anybody else in my life kick me like him and as painful.

Bas and the liver shot. Now that is a thing of beauty.
You should see him back in his Pancrase days. He dropped some great fighters by hitting the liver. He crushed Frank Shamrock with a liver shot.

My fault, that was actually Guy Mezger. See approximately 1:00 in the vid.
(EDIT: Some bad language in the song so you might want to watch it with the volume down if there's kids around.)

That's a pretty good video! I was always told that the liver is mostly hidden by the ribcage, but that a slice by the size of two to three finders are sticking out under the ribcage. I had no idea that the liver was actually so big, and I never realized that it will move when the lungs are filled. Very informative!

I took a nasty liver shot from my Sempai last night - Knocked the wind right out of me. It doesn't matter how strong or fit you are, one good liver shot and you can be out for the count. There are a lot of Kyokushin vids where they walk out and one guy just drops the other straight away with a good liver shot. Besides a knockout kick to the head the liver shot is another top target to end a fight quickly.

my best punch is the left to the body. here's an example of me applying the liver shot in an american kickboxing (above the waist rules) bout from 1997. even though i dropped him with the liver, he was able to recover and finish a nine round bout. after round 4, i stopped going for knock out and focused on getting the decision. some guys don't get up and some do.
