4 Traditional Kata (Naihanchi, Chil Sung Ee Ro Hyung, Seichan and Niseishi)
5 Hybrid Goshin Kata (Kuri Tora No Kata Ichi, Ni, San, Yon and Go).

All Sparring Etc is as per Sabaki Knockdown rules

What do "Koku Tora" and "Kuri Tora" (no Kata) mean?

Congratulations on founding your new style. By the way is it added to your Ashihara teaching or you have now become independent?

OSU!

Thank you Kakatooshi-san for your kind words

'Koku' and 'Kuri' I have been told and confirmed on the web are both Japanese for the word 'Black' and 'Tora' means 'Tiger'

I hope I got it correct as my Japanese is 'karate Japanese'. I was advised it is dependent on context as which to use, for example - arigato gazimas and arigato gazimashita. 'Koku' is supposed to a statement of fact and 'Kuri' is a description

Regards Ashihara karate, this is a natural progression, my outlook in my karate changed, due to my Wado Ryu practice and I looked at my karate in a different light I was unable to 'evolve' my Ashihara any further.

I had to take steps to keep as close to Ashihara (NIKO) as I could possibly do but to include what I believe is/was 'real karate'.

I hope Ashihara Kancho would be pleased with what I have done with my karate.

I think black tiger (黒虎) should be "Kurotora" (or in rarer cases "Kokuko"?). Can our team of Japanese linguists give comments on this?

The chestnut tiger? !!

Could it be" Kuro....not Kuri?

Koku often has the connotation of meaning "dark"...as in dark chocolate, or dark coffee...

Kurotora (Black Tiger) would be technically correct since it utilizes kunyomi for both kanji (gotta be careful about onyomi, kunyomi, and special circumstantial pronunciations!), but I'd be hesitant to use it since the first thing a Japanese person would think about is Byakko the White Tiger 白虎 of the Shijin 四神. The Shijin are in Japanese mythology the four gods of the four cardinal directions, and Byakko is the god of the West. So in naming your style "Black Tiger", it would seem to diametrically oppose Byakko of the West and could create all sorts of interesting connotations.

Also, Kuritora 栗虎 does indeed mean "Chestnut Tiger"

Thanks Guys for all the Kind words

I'll get the Kata added to You Tube as soon as I can get them digitally recorded I may add them to my New Website too once its up and running.

I would love to learn more about "Byakko the White Tiger 白虎 of the Shijin 四神. The Shijin are in Japanese mythology the four gods of the four cardinal directions". I did look at a Chinese Gung Fu style called Black Tiger Kung Fu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Tiger_Kung_Fu). I appologise for not looking at Japanese mythology prior to 'naming the style, I had looked at Japanese Paintings that depicted 'black Tigers' and presumed it would be fine

I should have got the name from the Film "Kuro Obi" but I didn't look at that avenue.

So my Club is actually now called

"Dark Tiger School of the Empty Hand Way"

And my Kata are now called.

"Chestnut Tiger Kata"

I was advised that to give a Kata a name such as "Houshin kata" or Jiiyushi Kata" was not a correct thing to do, but it was ok to call kata by the style and number.

Either way I have all the stationary done so it must be so (There is a reason for everything in life I believe).

I did actually think about calling it 'DobberskyRyu' but It didn't have the same 'ring' to it.

Osu!!!!

What is the actual fighting like? Kyokushin rules or other? MMA-influence? Face punches?
