Can anyone explain rules of Japanese Point Sparring?
Can anyone explain the basics of Japanese Point Sparring in tournaments? How do you score an "Ippon"(sp?)? Where do you want to land your punches and kicks? What do you want to avoid? How is it scored? Judged? What is the level of contact expected? I am entering a open karate tournament on Halloween and am pretty clueless overall. Any info would be appreciated.

It varies from competition to competition. There are many types of point sparring which utilize a different set of rules.
WKF format, Shobu Ippon, JKA format etc etc.
Do you know which organization is hosting the tournament?

Osu!
DharmaDesigns, you have full access to that info through your own Dojo, so I highly recommend you get the rundown there rather than here. We could easily make a mistake.

I believe I can help We generally don't spend much time on point sparring in class unless its for an upcoming tournament, so don't feel bad. I wouldn't be surprised if sensei goes over some point sparring stuff this Wed / Thurs... They'll also explain the rules at the tournament before the sparring starts. But here's my two cents....
Contact should be fairly light. Points are scored for a good clean technique to a good target, although this can be pretty subjective. Some judges award points for sloppy stuff and some judges don't... Target areas are torso and front and sides of the head. Sometimes they allow leg kicks, but only if you follow up with something else - you'll never score with just a leg kick. They'll let you know that during the rules discussion before the sparring starts. You can score with pretty much any technique - kicks, punches, ridge hand, etc... Point sparring is generally more about speed - getting there first. Scoring is in full point increments (no half points), and its usually the first person to 5 (or sometimes just 3), or whoever is ahead after 2 minutes. Also, in point sparring, they'll stop the action after every point scored or any time a judge things they saw a point - its not nonstop like in knockdown sparring.
I hope that helps!

So the goal is to effectively block whatever they try and mostly punch? or kick then punch? I've asked a few black belts about it, and I'm still hopelessly confused. I'm pretty lost..... We never do that type of sparring in our dojo, right? So, I guess to spar like we do in class, I would have to spar total knock down? That sucks because I like my face and enjoy my brain; so I'm never doing that. I think I should suck whole heartedly at this tournament probably. Any more info would be greatly appreciated. Kicks to the face, you mentioned?

Search for "point sparring" on youtube just to get a feel for it. And don't worry if you suck at it - I suck royally at it. Just have fun!

As stated above point sparring is about speed, distance, timing and execution of technique.
These are a few strategies for point sparring: Go no sen, Sen no sen, and Sensen no sen.
Go no sen means to respond to an attack -- to counterattack. Someone attacks you and in response, you block (or do some other technique). First the attack and then the response.
Sen no sen means a simultaneous response. Someone attacks and you counter at the same time. There is no gap.
sensen no sen which means that you illicit a response from your opponent and then go in for the attack.
Just to name a few.... Good luck.
