Techniques in Kyokushin
Hey Everyone,
So I just joined now, and I'm starting my first Kyokushin class tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to it, but I got some questions to ask you guys since I didn't get the clearest answers when I spoke to guys there last since I was in a hurry... What are the use of elbows and knees like in Kyokushin (self defense, kumite, tournaments etc?) Whats the rule in knockdown tournaments for staying on the ground, I've heard you have five seconds but then I've also heard as soon as you go down you've lost? That there were non-contact, semi contact and full contact tournaments... do you use gloves and headgear in the semi contact tournaments? and... are there any guys from Australia on these boards? There were more questions but thats all I could think of for now... and sorry if there have already been topics on this but I couldn't find any! Thanks in advance guys Ven |

Dear Veniamin,
Welcome to the world of kyokushin and also to this message board. Let me give you answers to some of your questions. In a self-defence situation the use of elbows is endless since there are no rules and I am not going into the details here. For a kyokushin style kumite all hand (including elbow) strikes can only be directed "below the neck". That means you can hit only the collarbone or below (of course no groin and back attack as you know). I have seen people using decending strikes on collarbone and "mawashi" strikes to the mid-section. But since you have just started kyokushin I think it is not a good idea to confuse you with too many new techniques and I think your instructor can give you good answers. As to the knockdown time, I think it is wriiten in every rule book of kyokushin as 3 seconds, not 5 seconds. And you do not necessarily have to go to the ground to be counted. Say, if you are hit in the stomach and you collapse a bit and show that the strike has the desired effects on you, then a good referee will put up his or her flag to give your opponent a "waza-ari"(half-point). If you do not resume a good fighting stance within the time of 3 seconds then the flag will be raised up diagonally to the side which sigifies an "ippon"(full point) and the bout ends. I do not know much about semi-contact tournaments. But not in all kyokushin tournaments do we adopt the "no gear, no pad" rules. Sometimes in senior or junior tournaments, protective gear may be used accordingly and for the same tournament, the use of protective gear between men and women can also be different. I hope you will enjoy your first class in kyokushin and just remember to say "OSU" tomorrow when you see your class and instructor. OSU!

Hey,
First day? Well I'm still getting used to the japanese names so I'll leave out what exact techniques we did for now but anyhow... We started with just stretching and warming up, with some joint loosening and knuckle pushups on pine boards. We then spent about 45 minutes doing various kicks and punches. We did one step sparring, and then some body conditioning for about 10 minutes where we were kicking eachother in the chest/abs. All in all it was great fun! The second lesson was just as good as well. Looking forward to going back next week! Ven
