Punching with the "proximal interphalangeal joints"
... or in laymen's terms, 2nd knuckles.
How many of you use the 2nd knuckles to punch in kumite? How effective is it? Are you more likely to damage your hand?

2nd knuckles? i dont follow.. if u mean the regular "Oi tsuki" done with the index-and-middle finger knuckes, then no problem there! i was taught to punch using the first two knuckes on the hand, i strenghtned them by doing push ups, preferably on hard floors, and makiwara.. that does negate the threat of damage to ur hand.. of course if ur hand is not trained and u hit someone on the head -in the streets, not in kumite obviously- ur gonna break something.. but if u train it, u can break bricks with it with no threat to ur hand! we always used it in kumite back in my dojo, and were taught to use it on the streets on the other guy's face.. if u are talking about the kidney punch (cant remember jap. name but u get it by bending ur fingers at the 2nd JOINT) used on kidneys, the solar plexus and the base of the neck and other fleshy parts of the body, then: we used it a few times, on the solar plexus, BUT, u MUST warm up well -finger push ups- and train by hitting the heavy bag for a loooonng time before trying to hit anything with it, other wise u will definetely damage something! i hope i was of help.. still, if i am missing something, please do tell! I often use a phoenix eye fist, if that's what you mean. It has a lot of stopping power to the body but is not used to the head. It needs a fair bit of conditioning to work.

This is Ryutoken - I had to go and look up the proximal interphalangeal joints on the interweb. I have used it when hooking behind the elbow to the ribs or kidney and find it very effective.
