Mae Keage and Yoko Keage
How many of you actually use these kicks in kumite?
Have you seen anyone do significant damage with these kicks? Personally, I find myself concentrating a lot of time on these kicks without ever using them. And I don't know if I'll ever develop them enough to be effective enough for actual fighting. Since my leg is kept straight, I feel that it lacks explosive power off the floor compared to my other kicks. And bringing them back to the starting point seems to be even weaker.

I never use them in kumite, nor thought about using it in kumite..
But I believe that they are useful for training kicks and improving flexibility.(warming up etc..) Osu!

Yes, these two exercises improve our flexibility and strength in the dynamic way.

Kakapi-, when is your grading for green belt on this forum? Shall we do it at the same time ?I dunno how these techniques can't be effectively used in kumite.. it would look rather funny. Mae Keage is okay I suppose though.. I wouldn't do it.

An instructor (Sensei) once told me they are strictly stretches & not attacks at all & that's why they're not called "yoko keage geri" or "mae keage geri" (although I've heard some "country karateka's" use those terms!)

Being Japanese, "yo keage geri" does sound not right.

I don't speak Japanese, but my understanding is that keage means to "kick upward?" I think they can be powerful kicks, but the delivery time doesn't seem to be as efficient as mae geri or yoko geri, and they demand a great deal of accuracy with little promise if they're not timed right. The closest clip that I've seen it landing is in Daisukey's Narushima Highlight at the 1:21 mark...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huB1Y4pzUjI There seems to be a little snap, but it resembles a soccer-style punt more than an orthodox front kick. Anyway, I have a few senpai that use them for tameshiwari demonstrations because they look fancy for the audience. So if the kicks can break boards, they can inflict damage to the body.

Yeah thats Narushimas half Mae half Mawashi geri.
I have never seen either kick being used in in tournaments. There are applications to them beyond stretching and exercise but I am sceptical of their practical appliactions.

Dear daisukey,
It is my honour to take my forum grading with the famous "King of kyokushin highlights". I have this suggestion: let us keeping posting until we both reach 345 and then we PM to discuss the details of our joint grading. OSU!

Those kicks are not very powerful and there're also chances to break your toes because those kicks move up ward so you can hit the opponent arms or elbows.

The possibilities of breaking something is there with any kick crashing to the elbow. You're not supposed to hit yoko keage with your toe, anyways.

Does anyone teach the Sokugi ichi with a bunkai? I have wondered about this myself. I guess this is only a kata for stretching while the other sokugi katas have real applications?...

I use them for dynamic flexibility and as warm-ups, that's about it.

I've seen mae kaege demonstrated as an attack on a downed opponent. It was used to kick the head of someone either on the ground of crouched over. I've never used either kick in kumite but like many others said, it is a good warm up technique.

I don't mind so much because it really does get my legs stretched out.

My feeling is mae keage can prepare you for kakato otoshi geri
