Alternate name for Do-Mawashi geri.
I understand that there are a few forms of Do-Mawashi geri.
In the recent fight event, I did a Do-Mawashi geri and a guy later said to me "That kick .. scorpion kick was cool.." I just thought and the english name kind of sounds cool. The Scorpion Kick ![]() |

Dear nzproud,
Quote:
In english, i have heard of "rolling thunder" (graham vs hari), "roll kick" and "kyokushin kick". In japanese, i think it is more or less "do-mawashi" and sometimes "do-mawashi-geri". OSU!

Different forms, such as Peter Graham sensei's and Lechi's are different in angles. Osu!

Dear nzproud,
Well that's a hard question when you put lechi into the equation. on most occasions the media refer to his kick as "tobi ushiro mawashi geri". but sometimes it's really hard to separate the two in view of the hitting angles displayed by many fighters nowadays. I don't know much about graham sorry. There was a japanese fighter (a wko guy little known in the west) called iizumi toshiaki and he was a master of domawashi (nicknamed "choujin"). one of his weapons was "over-head kick" (or something like that). And yes it is exactly like what you see in soccer. And I think andrews nakahara also does an impressive jumping kick of some sort and i wonder if it can be categorized as a type of domawashi. the answers are endless. OSU!

This is Andrews Nakahara's kick if I'm not mistaken. This clip is a wee bit sloppy but I'm sure this is the kick. I seen him do it at the All American Open several times.

Dear sokaiya,
I saw him did it once but without the initial spin of body. But maybe it was just a "tobi mawashi gei"? OSU!

Yeah, all I remember is the end as well. He does it so quick and out of no where that it's a blur in my memory too.

I watched the 2005 All Americans DVD last night, Nakahara seems to have a couple of variations of tobi / mawashi geri, both with elements of the "brazilian kick", one loops out and over the guard looking at first like a soto mawashi, then employs the flicking brazilian action to bring it down hard, the other starts in the same basic way but comes form much closer, using the kicking leg to generate momentum enough to jump off the floor and uses the body wieght to bring the kick across and down.
He's a bit of freak when it comes to kicks eh??

Dear Lanky Sempai,
OFF-TOPIC Let me first of all congratulate Prasad Sempai on her good result in the tournament. And I would also like to listen to your opinion on the controversies of "men's final" and "women's yokozuna", and also any other things you would like share with us (let's discuss it in the "all-american" thread"). OSU!

My beautifuul wife brought back all kind of goodies for me and the dojo, the DVD is very cool, I think I've watched from the quarters through to the final 3/4 times so far and we've had them for less than 24hrs!! Hahaha!

wheelkick in english, Do-mawashi kaitengeri in japanese. Same thing, different name. There are local variations even in what formal grading techniques are called in japanese sometimes. (empi ate/hiji ate for example).
Noone has sat down and determined a "standard" english name for techniques.
