Ibuki is a Japanese word meaning 'adding vigor, or breathing new energy into'.

A nice essay about Ibuki breathing you can read here

meaning of kata
hi,

donīt know if you mean "seienchin". if yes, there is no (direct) pull in this kata. only a throw called "kataguruma". maybe you can declare it as a pull and throw.

for further information take up a good kata-book, maybe from hanshi steve arneil or shihan brian fitkin.

hope this help you a bit.

Dear tio dunxx,
In "tournament kumite" there "should be" no pulling of course.
But in self defense training or in dojo kumite, pulling is never unheard of.

The can of worms question... Bunki and its meaning.
Well like all things this is a question with no true answer but sevral hundred good answers to it.
And possible all being very good ones at that, yet no true way of telling if any are correct or not.

I think so far the best "READING" on this answer is > shotokan secrets's the hidden truth behind karate's fighting origins
The first two chapters do talk about how many stories have no true (possible that is) no really truth to them.

Though we have no way to really know if the writing in this book is accurate or in any book that is, it does give a new and some what more realistic view on all the stories and tales as well history on empty hand arts.
Both in the history of Karate and some of the masters as well stories that we have been told about the japanese master...
Like any new or newly found information, we the reader can only draw two conclusions... we believe what we have read/learned or we don't!!!

You decide and keep an open mind, sometimes the truth is the last thing told or beleived. We often do not wish to believe our mentors/hero's are much less than what we "think" they truly are.

There is .... opening move (and 2 following) bunkai of this move is grabbing both wrists and pulling and twisting tori (attacker) down.

pull
dear ksan,

i agree with you. yes, this is ONE declaration. another one sees this move only as a morote gedan barai.

donīt know what movement tio dunxx has meant directly. if itīs the beginnig like your declaration, so i must say, there are many katas with a "pull". but there are not so much katas with a "throw" in it.

bunkai is a nice thing, i like it. ;-)

you can debate this till the cows come how, it is a question that no one can truly answer with 100% certainty or more like with 50% only.
This is a ? that has ruined many a friendship and split many groups and styles...
Since no writen records are known from the people who devised kata's it is a big disagreement among many (millions).
I beleive that it is best to learn as taught and then if taught differently take that in and add it to your knowledge.

About seyunchin and ibuki... It may be a good idea to see what the Okinawans do with that kata and with the breathing in sanchin. After all, kyokushin got them from goju kai, and goju kai got them from Miyagi Chojun, goju ryu founder.
