Often in kyokushin fights there are extensions if the first round is very equal. I think this tiny moment when you are listening to the judges is very crucial and important. How do you think that you can revive your stamina and mentality in this moment?

I never really listened to the judges or looked at the flags the way some people do,i always assumed there would be another round so i just thought about attacking them again .

Billy - thats what I used to do to. Assume the worst and be prepared for the next round if it comes.

Just natural deep breathing without appearing to be breatheless tip of my tongue against my top teeth and cycle the air in and out,i don't know if its the best or even a good way of doing it but its what i did and continue to do .
Hands on hips or behind the head probably open up the airways better but show your out of breath i prefered to stand in fudo dachi with my gaze fixed on them . |

Japanese IKO1 kyokushin champion "Uchida" seems to be breathing with his shoulder.

Ibuki Breathing...without doubt. This is what I was always taught, and it has a sound scientific basis too, I think. - by increasing the air pressure in your lungs (by breathing out against a partially closed voice-box) you increase the amount of oxygen that can cross into your blood. (The physics behind this is that the amount of oxygen absorbed depends on the "pressure" in the lungs vs the "pressure" in the blood (O2 partial pressure, for the gas-fluid-dynamics geeks). The down-side is that this can also decrease the rate of CO2 clearance, which is relevant if you are lactated out...My advice, based on what I was taught by my Sensei and reinforced by studies is - initially blow off the CO2 by hyperventilating, for a few seconds, then ibuki. Then if they still haven't called it, repeat the cycle.
Have a think about this - your body actually does a variant of this instinctively. When you are absolutetly stuffed, you start breating really fast (hyperventilating), and often, there will be little grunts at the start of the breaths (increasing the lung pressure). ![]() |

Ive heard Ibuki breathing being advocated for such a purpose before but never really seen it in a tournament enviroment(though i saw a Enshin guy doing it before some sabaki sparring for his black belt)its sound in principle, but i dont know if anyone would have the prescence of mind to make that sort of effort in the short space between rounds .

Dear nzproud,
What do you mean by "breathing with the shoulder"? OSU!
