In tkd aswell ofcourse, but then tkd is derrived from karate and started to differ in the early 70ies, so it does not say much. It is not found in trad shotokan or gojuryu which is the karate Sosai studied Quote:
It is in David Cooks "kyokushin karate" from the mid 70ies. But not showing a technique is not the same as saying that it does not exist.

I too do not know its exact history, but I think he is not the first one to use this kick in Kyokushin (only he was the one that used this kick so well that it became famous).

An old carpenter lost his balance in a construction site then fell on a guy with his heel which knocked him out. Andy Hug was jogging and was just passing by he got the idea!

its beautiful, becuase the opponent usually doesn't expect it; but you have to execute it quickly...

It has been in the syllabus since I started training but the first time I saw it used in Knockdown was by Andy Hug

I've not yet been able to do an axe kick on anyone over the age of say, four. I know this is more of a training question, but for those of you are able to do real axe kicks, were you born with extra flexibility, or am I missing something/ Osu!

I do axe kicks right now, and i have CRAPPY flexibility. I used to do it when i was taking TKD. What i do when i'm doing an axe kick is i start the kick like a soto or uchi mawashi geri...then stop in the middle and slam it down. a lot of hip movement for me....

Sounds like a very effective technique... and who needs to kick over waist height anyway - flashy so-and-sos..

For me when doing the Axe Kick, my hips....as in the joint where my thigh attaches to the hip bone, not lower back and hip bone...are about 70% relaxed on the Soto / Uchi Mawashi...i kick up the leg using mostly lower back and hip bone movement with minor thigh and hip bone joint. Unless you are experiencing pain...the bad kind...on the rotational movement, you should be able to do it if you relax a bit. But i can only do this movement once i am warmed up...without warming up, my leg only travels to my neck! And also being able to do a decent front split also helps....decent as in at least be able to palm the floor with both hands and elbows bent slightly when doing the front split (both legs straight). ![]()

) by trying an axkick but somehow, probably the distance, ending up slamming my heel into his tigh and ending the sparring round - nice violet bruise now. So, who needs an axkick on the head if the other one is also effective ![]()

I think you're right about the front splits, because I am possibly even worse at those than the axe kick. Even back in the day when I could do full box splits, I was nowhere near the ground on front splits. Since having my hamstring carved, well, I think you can guess. Thanks for the suggestions though, Kansetsu, I will try! Osu!

I find that the only jodan kicks I ever hit with are the sote/uchi/mae keage. In my eyes, it's the easiest kick in the whole syllabus. I don't think I'm much more flexible than average. The key is not to lift your leg up, but to actually use the hip to "throw" it up there. Then roll your hip forward to get that extra 15 cm, and pull down wi |
