Flexibility
Hi!
I've been training Daido Juku for about 6 months now and I have a problem with flexibility, I always train flexibility when I train but it's going very slow and it gives me problems when I want to do Jodan Mawashi Geri. I can almost do the splits with my right leg in front but not as good with my left leg in front, when it's on my sides I only come about half way down, I'd say that It's a little more than 90 degrees. Can anybody help me increase my flexibility??? ![]() |

after some time of stretching, you'll see the difference....just have to be a little patient when it comes to muscles and stretching.

It took me like 3 and a half years to be able to do the front split. Even so, I still can't do the full side split but it gets quite close now. If you are not so young, I think you need a great deal of time to work on your flexibility.
For high kicks, I would suggest dynamic stretch rather than static stretch. When I did Shotokan, I mostly did static stretch but when switching to Shanshou, I did a lot of the dynamic ones and my flexibility improved greatly. Now I can roundhouse kick higher than my head and side kick as high as my head. |

Osu!
Is there any specific way to motivate yourself for stretching? That's where I need the real trick. ![]() Osu!

I agree with cochito, that the key is to take time, and not to expect immediate results.
The thing i did to increase my flexibity is that when i practiced doing my stretches and techniques that required an amount of flexibility, i would push myself to a limited level and after a while when i feel confident enough i would extend my stretches to the next level, but only at a limited level you can feel comfortable in, but you still have to feel the muscles stretching. Oh, and i got a tip when doing kicks like Jodan mawashi geri is that you bend the supporting leg lower and pivot the heel when kicking to such a height. Because bending the supporting leg allows you more flexibility for your other leg to reach such height and distance, it also allows more power into techniques like gedan mawashi geri. |

Thanks for trying Cochito. If I'm going to listen to music, I'd rather be hitting something. ![]() I reckon I must be stretching-for-fun gene deficient. ![]() Osu!

Watching William Oliver kick makes me want to be more and more flexible and that motivates me to stretch. I am almost there at this point too!

Then you are about a dozen times more flexible than I am, MilkManX. ![]() Osu!

Stretch your legs up on your desk or other prop while on your computer. (Like I'm doing right now. Yea, right, right.)

Something like the commercial for the restaurant CHILI'S that is on tv now, when the group plays musical chairs when the person on the other end of their telephone conference puts them on hold...
