Hey!
Is it only the gedan mw geri you are struggling with or is chudan and jodan as well? My problem with the mw gedan was that I was kicking slightlig upwards,so the shin did not ged that impact I wanted. The reson was that I was extend my standig leg the same time as throwing the kick. This again resulted that I not was turning the standig foot. So I change the mw gedan to start i little higher and throw it downwards, turning my standing foot, and "sitting" down at the same time. I also fokused to hit the same spot each time, just over the knee not where the thigh is thinner. (like to add it is impotaint to remember the timing of the kick, good timing will catch your opponent better.) This was my problem some time ago, dont know if this can help you but we always got to try =o) Hard give the right help without se =o) |

Osu!
Tough question. There are many ways of doing Mawashi Geri Gedan, depending on the movement and angle of the opponent. There's a time for pressing in, and a time for quickly pulling away. Up kicks, down kicks, and kicks that are perpendicular to the contact surface. There's striking with the foot, the area just above the ankle, middle of the shin, and the one just below the knee. (One Shihan I know even does a funky turned hip so that the bony part of the outside of the ankle digs right in there. )If you're just looking to up the basic whack-factor, I'd go with Seienchin's earlier post on increasing your speed. It's usually a good idea anyway, but being a quick kicker can really help. Osu!

There are tons of variations of gedan mawashi geri, and it's fun to experiment with it. For a regular kick with a lot of power, many things need to be right. Are you putting your entire weight into the kick? You really need to use your hip, and think that the impact should not be on the leg itself, but kick all the way "through" the leg! To doo that, it's really important that you have a proper wind-up and that you turn on your standing foot.
You don't need to kick downwards. In fact, if you look at physics, it would be best to kick as horizontal as possible if you want greater impact.

Yes each fighter have a twist of his/her own =o)
Like to add that Isted of kicking upwards (many does that because they dont turn the standing foot) I like to focus on kicking a little downwards... =o) more focus than actually do it. |

Osu! Adding my 2 cents....good advice so far.
When I teach Mawashi geri I make sure my students raise their leg of the kicking leg to their side. That is if you are facing north the knee of the kicking leg is definetly east or west. As stated be sure to twist/turn on the supporting foot. I also ensure that the leg travels horizontal to the floor, and comes back the same way. I tell my beginers this is a slower kick but a stronger kick. So what is my point you may ask?? :-) The point is, be sure to have the impact of the foot or shin to be perpendicular to the target ( for the most part ) and by training the kick this way you train all the muscles to react the way you want. In a nutshell train the the basics. Try kicking slow, take two three seconds to control the kick, use a wall or partner for balance if need be. Once you really have that down I think you will see a marked increase in you kicking power. Then you can play with different angles, front leg and rear leg kicking etc. |

One of the mistakes many people do is that their knee doesn't go past the target when they kick - and the end up straightening the leg almost completely at the end of the kick and transferring very little power onto the oponent's leg. make sure you pivot on the supporting leg and twist the hips into the kick as well - and the knee has got to go past the target whether you kick gedan, chudan or jodan mawashi
