Correct fist grip
I was watching kyokushin encyclopedia on youtube, and they show how to correctly form a fist.
They say bring the tip of your finger to the joint between the finger and the palm, and then roll your fingers inwards. When I do this, the skin on the upper parts of the palm (under the fingers) gets rolled over, making the fist really uncomfortable, and not shut completely. Any suggestions? Osu |

I would offer the thought that perhaps you might be overexaggerating the concept to the point where it becomes a hazard rather than a help. I've done that to myself more than once when I was working on my skills. Try keeping the same idea, but allowing the flexibility of doing it less intensely... maybe that will make the fist formation work for you.
If you can get your hands on Sosai Oyama's books like "This is Karate", or "What is Karate", or "Advanced Karate" etc. He has included step by step instructions on how to make a fist with supportive pictures. |

It tucks away the second row of knuckles nicely and somehow the seiken knuckles seem more raised than the 3rd and 4th knuckles. Or perhaps when the skin is taut whilst in a fist, the callous on the first 2 knuckles makes them appear raised? Anyhow, a career as a hand model is out of the question for me ![]() |

Most welcome, Bloke! It's an oddly difficult thing to carry over sometimes.I have a question for the members: How do you teach the ET doubles to make a fist? I've had a couple of people whose fingers seem better suited for spider puppets than Karate, and short of lopping off a few inches, I don't see how they can strike with the top two knuckles. (Maybe some of the funkier striking methods were designed for just these cases?) Osu!

I have really big hands with long fingers and I just roll mine up with the second wrinkle in the palm. Works fine for me.

Here's a question that I've always wondered. How do some ladies manage to make a proper fist with those long decorated manicured nails on their fingers without it hurting their palm? Is there a special trick?

I would have though that short nails (toe & hand!) would be a pre-requisite for training at any dojo, so maybe you need these: False Nails Direct ![]() |
