I am looking for tips to improve my Back Kick and Spinning Back Kick?
Specifically from a Forward Roundhouse to Back Kick or Spinning back kick? Any help would be great! ![]()

If you are doing mawashi geri followed by ushiro mawashi geri, you could "cheat" and put your front (kicking) leg slightly over your centre line after delivering the mawashi geri, while turning your back foot. That way, your spinning kick has a shorter distance to travel. Not at all okay in a kata, and any sempai will spank me for advising it at all, but try it for kumite.
Asides from that, rotate with your entire body, from toe to hip to torso to neck - use your elbows to "pull yourself" around. Make sure to look over your shoulder, otherwise you will not get the impact zone right. Retract your leg after the kick, so you land in a balanced kumite no kamae. With ushiro geri, I find it easier to tuck the leg in as close to my standing leg as possible, so the knee points to the floor. I hope that helps, and that my explanation is understood. This was very general, of course. If there is anything specific, other than the roundhouse - spinning kick combination, don't be afraid to ask.

Mike, keep in mind that the spinning kick is actually two moves put together. First, there is the actual kick--side kick, back kick, hook kick.
After that is the spin. My recommendation is that you work on those kicks first. The most common spin kick, the ushiro mawashi, or spinning roundhouse, is actually a spinning hook kick. The knee comes up to point at the opponents head (chambering the kick) the side kick to the side of the opponent's head and try to kick yourself in the butt as hard as you can. For the spin portion, do this separately. The head turns first, then the body. Now, put them together-- 1)head turns, body follows. 2)knee chambers, pointing at opponent's head 3)kick to the side of the opponent's head in a side kick and then try to kick yourself in the butt as hard as you can before putting your leg down. 4)Congrats! That's a spinning ushiro mawashi geri! Now, break the combos down this way--first, throw round house kick. When you are putting your leg down, instead of putting it in front of you, let it drift over a little bit so your legs are slightly criss crossed. As your leg drifts over, turn your head and your body will follow. As your other leg comes around, chamber that knee and follow the directions above to do the kick. If you are doing a ushiro yoko geri (spinning side kick) follow directions above, except the hip has to turn over as you extend the leg outwards. Give me a call if you are confused. practice! Osu! BTW, how did your test go? |

Great explanation medguy, couldn't have said it better myself. Was basically going to point out the two moves put together and leave it there.
One tip to add is don't step accross to initiate the spin, alot of people start out doing this which makes the kick slower and easy to see coming. Just rotate on your forward foot.

If you're right handed you probably spin clockwise better than you do counter clockwise. I would suggest focusing on the way you spin better to get the mechanics down and then when you feel you are kicking it right, try and replicate going the other way. Be patient... I'm still not quite where I want to be with it either.
Some have also suggested doing ura kata to build up spin technique, but I doubt you do those in Enshin. ![]() |

Thanks Smooth.
Yeah I got to do some of this in class last night as we did some drills involving Spinning Back Kicks! I swear my Sensei is psychic sometimes.
