Missed a lot of the action on this thread - just catching up after holiday...

I was always taught (in karate) to
1. Point the toes in hiza geri, exactly the same foot position as kin geri.
2. Drive forwards

There is actually a difference in the technique performed to rapid count in basics, vs the techniqu that you will use against a shield pad held up by a partner. The latter is the way to perfect the kind of penetration that is being described.

I think that perhaps it may not be such a firm "muay thai/karate" divide, because from reading the responses, many of us have been fortunate enough to learn the described technique within traditional kyokushin dojos. However, I would really like to see the vids, to ensure that I am not being "cup full" over this..

no need to feel like one is comparing the techniques to say one type of knee is better than the other. the knee is a hard bone and the only way to develop it is through use combat. a friend of mine was said the muay thai style round kick was superior to the karate and tkd round kicks. my response was that the brain doesn't care which technique racks it against it's skull.
