back to kyokushin too - training question
Hi everyone
After a 9 year break (I started when I was nine but stopped at 10. Kyu) i had a first test training last week, i had to show that i am still able to do the Kata and techniques and then we trained lowkicks and did some sparring. I just heard that we don't have training today, but i really want to do something for me but i don't know what, i will work on my fitness but what else should I do? I really need to do something, can't explain why ![]() Thank you for your help in advance ![]() OSU! |

Are you asking for exercises to do by yourself at home? Sets of pushups are great, as are leg raises. Both should pass the time nicely and help to get you back in shape for training.

I'm asking for some techniques I can practice, or should better just work on my fitness until i can go to the dojo again?

Well, in my humble opinion or IMHO...
Work on fitness outside of class until you've gotten readjusted to correct form of kihon. Practicing 100 repetition of incorrect kihon will set you back farther than waiting a few days for the next class.

![]() Thanks a lot, so I will just work on my fitness But I have another question I wanted to ask my sensei today: how much warm-up do you need until you can begin stretching? Thanks a lot for the answers ![]() |

I usually jog for about 10 minutes on the treadmill until my muscles warm up a little before I stretch out. It is possible to stretch cold. Perhaps do
10 mae geri, mawashi geri. Splits 10 seconds, Left and Right 10 seconds each. 10 mae geri, mawashi geri. Splits 10 seconds, Left and Right 10 seconds each. Do a couple more sets of that then proceed into your regular stretching routine.

Dear Paedde,
I would suggest you to have a complete review of your Kihon. Sorry to say but you have been away for nine years as a tenth kyu (and as your profile says you were only nine when you left) so I think maybe it is a good idea to start fresh without hanging on to the bits and pieces that were left. As an young adult you should be able to understand Kihon (and Ido, Kata) a lot better as most children can only follow the actions without understanding the fine points that are in fact important. You should now aim to understand Kyokushin as a different person. But it shows your dedication when you want to take up some extra training off-class. If you want to do some fitness training that is good and just go for it, but I still think that understanding and repeating the basics in "good form" is most important at your current stage. OSU!

Yes do not stretch cold.... warm up your muscles or you will end up doing more harm than good by tearing something.

Hmm i have another question,
how often should I go train? Because after the holidays two other dojos open in which i can train without paying again, i could train up to five times per week, but is that a good idea? especially on my beginner level Thanks a lot for help in advance ![]() |

Dear Paedde,
As I have said learning the good form is important for beginners. If you can concentrate on each lesson and strengthen your basics in Karate, then training five times a week is very good. If the amount of training is not something that you can physically handle, or the worst of all, you cannot concentrate because you are training too much, I will suggest you to train less. You must strike a balance between quality and quantity. Your Kyokushin will not get any better if you repeat one thousand Seiken Tsuki without gripping the right fist or two thousand Taikyoku Sono Ichi without sinking into the correct Zekutsu Dachi. To sum up, when you want to put more time in training, you must also remember to concentrate in each training. OSU!

![]() I think every second day could be a good idea, do you think it's a problem when I face three different sensei in a week? Or is it even an advantage? The 10 Kyu basics aren't the problem, we we're just 4 people at the last training so the sensei had a lot time to help me to adjust every thing to the correct form (a question by the way, they changed the way they draw the hand back because of changing the organisation, is there any reason for that?) ![]() |

Sometimes people change techniques in kata because the head of the organisation believes a particular bunkai is more realistic than another, so the technique reflects this. Other times, the person simply wants to put their stamp on something, make a change for the sake of being referenced as making that change. Unfortunate, but it happens.
