I am not feeling quite as terrible as the first week and I feel I need to add more. I am going to try and get my brother to do more pad work, bag work, and more cardio. I need cardio, cardio, cardio. I'll see what I can work in here.

What you need is someone who knows how to put all the training into a condition workout, that will help you and make each workout mesh with the prior and the next one.

You need a bag man that knows how to put a condition workout together, that trains the body and mind and pushes the spirit at the same time be able to translate conditioning to the ring. So often workouts are just that workouts not training, conditioning, or preperation for a tourney or fight, Big Difference!!!

Have you figured out what you are tring to accomplish??? i.e. a goa????l Getting better, improving or adding new skills. Besides getting the body in shape, the skills & the spirit needs to all be equal and balanced.
To many times I've seen good fighters get into "Shape" and not into "Condition" , the difference is shape is one of 3, condition is all 3, mind, body, spirit...

Good Luck

I started writing this a text message, but it's too long. You may want to check out Black Belt Academy out by you I think they sell cheap thai pads, also Modern Warrior in Lindenhurst. Also if you want to go cheap, you can have your brother put your cloth shinguards on his arms (thumb through the heel hole) then have him put on 16oz gloves. Then you put on some 16oz and your combat sports shinpads (on your legs). Now you can punch and kick him.

Sorry to keep everyone waiting, I know you guys are so excited to see how my noobish training is progressing in preparation for my first ever SEMI-contact competition. Woo-hoo!

4/19/07-Jogged in the moring, I need to take aspirin before hand as shins are killing me. Went to karate in eveing, did a lot of bag work and conditioing, Sensei was extra cool in helping me train

4/20-Went on stationary bike because shins really hurt, threw on 16 oz gloves while cycling, a surpisingly good workout. Went to my landscaping job in the afternoon, a lot of digging got home late and didn't go to judo (lazy, I know)

4/21-Stationary bike whilst throwing punches again, Enshin went good, Sensei helping me to adjust to kyokushin rules

4/22-Another stationary bike/punxhing session, Went to see Battle O'Brooklyn, Sogo is now my eventual goal

I will make another post tonight.
4/22-

I know this may sound like another pain, but two things about your shins. Make sure you have good running sneakers. Your sneakers may be worn out without you even really running with them before (because of age). Secondly, I know it's boring but try running on the high school track, it's alot better for your shin and knees.

Ojgsxr6 is right. Try to minimize running on hard surfaces, it's a heck of a lot rougher on your lower legs.

Monday-Morning:Started to run but my shins started to hurt, said screw it and skipped on cardio
Afternoon:Brother was't home did 3x3 min rounds on the heavy bag, felt lazy all day
Eveningidn't go to kickboxing, almost didn't go to Enshin, class sucked. Everyone was there including everyone who does not have a desire to ever compete (as in I am the only person who has a desire to fight)

Tuesday-Morning: Woke up late no workout

Afternoon:Should have weighlifted (yes set up my weights) but I got my new thai pads in the mail and my brother was home

2x2 min rounds of jump rope with 30 sec rests

stretching

5x2 min round with 30 sec rests pad work

2x2 min rounds checking the boomstick

5x3 min round with 1 min rest alternating between bag and padded up brother

Evening:One of my judo teachers died of a heart attack this weekend, school close for awhile

Monday I was just feeling really lazy I have no real excuses but Enshin left me feeling annoyed. Last week, it was just me and my teacher and he seemed excited that I wanted to compete. We did alot of conditioing and he really helped me with my technique and we concentrated on kyokushin legal stuff. Monday we worked on our japanese and class etiquette and Sabaki technique. That made me very annoyed. I didn't get a good workout during the day and my karate class was annoying. I almost felt like quitting this whole karate thing.

Thai pads are fun. I learned that Tuesday. Found out one of my judo instructors died. Almost felt like it would have been a good day.

I'll do better tommorow I swear!

Not every day will be strictly for fighting, you'll be surprised at how learning the nuances can help out a lot. Sabaki technique is especially going to be useful to you, so it's good to learn.

True but every day should have some form of fighting, whether it's drills or whatever.

True. I meant more like "not everyday is strictly focused on competition."

Wednesday: Didn't do anything, thought seriously about quitting karate altogether.

Thursday: Morning didn't do anything but still got up early, still didn't want to go to karate. My younger brother wanted me to find the Daido Juku HL on youtube for him before he went to school. He said it would get him pumped for gym class that day. Made me want do karate again (like the 1st time I saw it)

Afternoon-
2x2min rounds jump rope

5x2min rounds pad work (Thai pads make me cramp, they make me tired, they are awesome)

2x2 min rounds shadow boxing (brother had to be somewhere, pissing me off, he is supposed to be committed to being my punching bag)

5x3 min rounds bag

50 high kicks in the air

Evening-Didn't have money to go to kickboxing so I needed something free, went to my university judo club, no workout really. 1 kid there thats it, he was smaller, in worse shape and less experience. I was mostly just helping him out. No good workout but I felt good helping the guy out.

Sometimes I seriously question whether or not I want to keep training at my karate school. Some days just frustrate me so much I just want to hand him my gi and tell him I am done. I really want to do karate and I really want my Enshin school (more like gym club) to work but sometimes I just feel like I am not getting the training I want. Lets see how I feel tommorow.

Been awhile since I posted anything mostly because I haven't done anything. I have been contemplating quitting karate for the last week.

I shouldn't have to do pad work with my brother. He shouldn't have to be my sole sparring partner. I shouldn't have to be doing all of this extra shit. The only time I have gotten in any real sparring or padwork in the last 6 months have been with my brother. I have improved more with working with my brother in the last 2 weeks than I have with the last 2 months of Enshin.

I wanted to do knockdown karate so so so so so bad. It took me awhile to even find my Enshin club. I have called other schools, went to that Kudo seminar, bought books, dvds, an f-ing space helmet (a poor investment), saw that Sogo bout. Now I just feel like I have been wasting my time and money and I am pissed.

I am not going to that tournament and probably not going back to karate either.

Sorry for the dear diary post but this is my training log.

everybody comes to a point where he/she feels like giving up ,even sosai did but you should never give in to that feeling this is where the test of being a true karateka comes in ,this is where u have to endure and train harder and get yourself motivated and go on ,this is where the word osu !!!!! should push you through it osu!!!!

If you wish to only fight then go to a MMA club and follow their training, it seems that is your way.
Karate is far far more than just K/D and is only the beginning of the art. Ussually saved for the young.

A second thought {not trying to hurt you or anything but...} have you ever thought that your dojo, instructor does not feel that you are able or at the caliber of a K/D fighter. Many wish to do K/D but a long lasting K/D fighter is few and far between. I can tell you from 30 years of teaching that everyone wishes to do and has the desire to do, but only a few really CAN, I only take a very small number to do...... It is best to hurt someone early and without injury, than to let them GET hurt badly with injury later!!!!!!!!

***Sit down and talk openly with your Sensei and find out what he/she feels and what you should do to get to the training you wish to.

I agree with ichigeki31, so many times you'll hit a low point, but you have to go ahead, especially in K/D. I know the feeling that you come to training, feel pumped up and in the end you do only kihon, had that numerous times. But everytime there was a sparring-session the spark came back. Moreover, consider yourself lucky that you got someone to sparr/train with; I couldn't get my boyfriend to do that...
So my advice, just hang in there, try not to get discouraged, and yes like japman said, talk to your sensei about your intention but most important: Do not stop training!

Though sparring is great, I use Kihan's as sparring....... I imagine a person in front of me as I do kihans and this is almost like sparring and it also lets the mind work as well pumps you up as you do kihons....
To tell you the truth, I bring in my imaginary partner into every class, this way I always have a partner while training.
You can know (in your mind) see targets attaches etc as you train, try it it takes a little imagination but it works once you get it.
