Back to training
Just like to share with everyone that I finally got off my butt and went back to training yesterday after about 18 months of being a slacker..!

Got a long way to go before I'm where I'd like to be but baby steps right?

Osu!

OSU! jcbel, take it easy which is harder than it sounds; If your dojo is anything like mine you won't be allowed to stand at the back and take it easy as you're a brown belt and I'm guessing here but I found it hard not to be competitive, and always wanted to be perfoming equal to the grade, best of luck.

Start slow and work your way back up there.

Haha, sounds a bit like myself. I took a long break from Judo (continued with self-defence and karate though) and have been getting back into Judo for a bit. Don't rush it, take your time. The last thing you'd want is to rush right into it and get an injury then have to take some time off to recover.

Good to hear it, JCBel! I hope that you'll be inspired, and safe.

Thanks for the support everyone!

Well I graded to 2nd kyu back in 2003 and it's been kind of downhill after that. Stopped training in mid 2004 and didn't start again till late 2005 (I had moved to two different cities by this time). The dojo I was training at was like tmd described, they had me stand in the front row from day one and I never really got into a rhythm there - was always struggling to be on par.

Didn't help that I wasn't training 5x a week like at my previous dojo. I think I was barely making it once a week... (yes working life does tend to change one's priorities!) At certain points I was missing for a couple of months for various reasons. Don't remember why but probably not very good ones.

I stopped training completely in early 2007 when I came over to Canada from Australia. One of the first things I did look for was a local Kyokushin dojo and found one fairly easily but could never bring myself to start training. I guess reading about people's experiences here on the forum not being able to find a dojo within reasonable distance started to make me feel guilty...

Anyways, the dojo currently has a small member base and is made up of primarily beginners (from what I've seen). They didn't have any problems with me standing at the back since I have little to no fitness. 20kg extra doesn't help (42 pounds to you non-metric people!) and it's amazing how much terminology I've forgotten in such a short time.

But yes my plan is to pace myself and not kill myself in the process.

Best of luck jcbel - glad to see you've foiund a dojo (and Sensei?) you feel happy with - keep it going at pace just above your comfort zone and you'll be back in the rythem in no time.

OSU JCBL,

Good timing to get back in shape
As Edmonton is not far from Banff, now that you're back training you will have to come to Banff in October for the International Camp with Shihan Filhio, Isobe and Lowe. It's listed as a Black Belt camp but they allow all kyu levels to attend.

I was at the last two (without Filhio Shihan), but with Kancho, Shihan Isobe and others there, and it's a definate "once in a lifetime" event.
